Sanford will continue
last year’s priorities
Gov. Mark Sanford said Tuesday he
will work to pass legislation on income
tax relief, government restructuring,
school choice for parents and tort reform
during the next legislative session.
Sanford listed 16 legislative items as
priorities last session. Of those, the
House passed 14. Three of those made it
through the Senate.
He laid blame for the inability to get
much of his agenda approved on rules
that allow one senator to block a bill.
Man denies killing
woman 15 years ago
SUMTER — A man charged earlier
this month with killing an acquaintance
15 years ago says he had nothing to do
with her death.
“I didn’t do this,” Tony Mack told
The (Sumter) Item in an interview from
jail “I wasn’t there. It’s wrong that they
bring up a murder charge because of
DNA.”
Mack, 39, is charged with murder in
the April 1989 death of Joyce Robinson,
whose throat was slashed in her home.
He was arrested Thursday in Fayetteville,
N C and waived extradition.

Rat body parts found
in meal at Piccadilly’s
MORROW, Ga. — The Piccadilly
restaurant chain has recalled a brand of
turnip greens sold at some of its 132
restaurants after a customer at a Georgia
outlet bit into greens containing rat
body parts.
The parts came into the Morrow
restaurant frozen with the greens, which
were supplied by a vendor, the chain’s
regional manager, Clint Celestin, said
Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for the local health
department, Sheryl Taylor, said her
agency’s investigation was inconclusive
as to the contamination’s source.
Ten Commandments
to face Court review
WASHINGTON — The Supreme
Court said Tuesday it will consider
whether the Ten Commandments may
be displayed on government property,
ending a 25-year silence on a church
state issue that has prompted bitter legal
fights around the country.
Ten Commandments displays are
common in town squares and
courthouses and on other government
owned land, including the Supreme
Court. A wall carving of Moses holding
the tablets is in the courtroom where
justices will hear arguments in the case.

U.S. troops launch
attacks on insurgents
BAGHOAD, Iraq — U.S. troops went
on the offensive from the gates of
Baghdad to the Syrian border Tuesday,
pounding Sunni insurgent positions
from the air and supporting Iraqi
soldiers in raids on mosques suspected of
harboring extremists.
American and Iraqi forces launched
the operations ahead of Ramadan,
expected to start at week’s end, in an
apparent attempt at preventing a repeat
of the insurgent violence that took place
at the start of last year’s Muslim holy
month.
Violence in Haiti’s
capital takes 46 lives
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti —
Violence in Haiti’s capital has claimed at
least 46 lives, with hospital records
showing Tuesday that 17 victims were
shot and killed this week. Many shops
and markets remained closed as hulks of
torched cars and bonfires of tires
smoldered in the streets.
Port-au-Prince has been beset by
gunbattles and beheadings since a Sept.
30 demonstration marking the 1991
coup that first overthrew President Jean
Bertrand Aristide. In February, the
former priest fled the country again after
a three-week revolt led by a street gang
and former soldiers.

Trump to

apprentice
BOISE, Idaho — Although Troy
McClain was fired by Donald Trump
during the first season of the NBC
reality show “The Apprentice,” it
hasn’t stopped several universities
and colleges from recruiting him to
star on their campuses.
McClain, who doesn’t have a
college degree, has been contacted by
Boise State University, Columbia
University and Albertson College of
Idaho over the past six months. He’s
also received offers from Hollywood,
his manager, Ed Moore, said
recently.
Moore said McClain met with a
Boise State academic counselor last
week but hasn’t made a final
decision. He needs to register by
Dec. 2 to attend January classes.

Cosby warns teens
of gangs in school
RICHMOND, Va. — Bill Cosby
spoke bluntly to students at
Richmond’s mostly black public
schools, urging them to dedicate
themselves to graduation, not gangs,
and to control anger that threatens
to derail their dreams.
Cosby toured four schools
Monday with former Gov. L.
Douglas Wilder, who is running for
mayor. Instead of talking about
politics, Cosby stuck to his no
nonsense message to inner city black
children.
“Study. That’s all. It’s not tough.
You’re not picking cotton. You’re
not picking up the trash. You’re not
washing windows. You sit down.
You read. You develop your brain,”
he said at Fred D. Thompson
Middle School, where ”65 percent of
the 700 students meet low-income
criteria for free or reduced-price
lunches.
There and at George Wythe
High School, the 67-year-old actor
comedian urged blacky children in
their teens to begin suidying in
groups, for girls not to allow
themselves to become pregnant and
for boys not to compensate for love
they lack at home with gangs or
sex.
“I’d like to tell you I don’t
think things have changed since I
was 14,” Cosby said. “There are
still old people who drink, do
drugs — who will stop and take
the time to tell you don’t be like
them? Have you heard them? Pay
attention to them.”
Cosby mentioned sex and an
auditorium packed with sixth
through eighth-graders buzzed with
laughter, catcalls and whistles. Then
he mentioned algebra, and the room
momentarily quieted.
“Everybody knows about sex.
Not too many people want to know
about algebra,” he said.
“Let’s think about love. Let’s
think about where it is and where
you can get it, but not sex. You’re
too young for sex,” he said jokingly.
“You don’t have sex ‘til you’re 50
years old. What, that’s too old? Well
how about 49?”
Idol finalist visits
Philippine palace
MANILA, Philippines —
“American Idol” finalist Jasmine
Trias got praise from Philippine
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo,
who saluted her singing talent and
called her an inspiration to Filipinos
everywhere.
The Filipino-American from
Hawaii visited Arroyo at the
presidential palace Tuesday with her
parents, siblings, grandparents and
an uncle.
Trias gave Arroyo autographed
photos, two boxes of macadamia
nuts and an orchid bud, her
signature hair accessory during the
“American Idol” competition.
“It’s good that as part of the
youth, you have a lot of energy,
and the smile is always there,”
Arroyo told the 17-year-old Trias.
“And you’re a family idol as
well.”
A palace statement quoted
Arroyo as praising Trias for her
singing talent, for serving as
inspiration for Filipinos and for her
family’s resolve to instill Filipino
values in their children.
Trias was quoted as saying she
hoped to have a day off before she
leaves Manila on Oct. 22 so that she
can enjoy the country’s famed
beaches.
She arrived in the country
last week to a rousing welcome
from fans and media, who
dubbed her arrival as
“Jasmania.”
She has spent her time
endorsing products and doing the
rounds of talk shows.
Trias made it to the top
three in the popular “American
Idol” singing contest in May.
Filipinos, like Hawaiians,
closely followed her
performance and cheered her
on.
