independent programs, which are
usually more expensive. Prices vary
according to the provider.
But bargains can be found
through outside programs. Lauren
Dickerson, a third-year print
journalism student, will travel to
Costa Rica next semester with an
independent study abroad
provider. The cost is actually about'
the same as a semester at USC and
Uher classes will be accredited and
counted toward her degree
requirements.
“1 took a personality type quiz to
determine where I wanted to go
and this (place) seems fun, for me,”
Dickerson said. She had originally
considered studying in Spain.
Whether you want to head
somewhere adventurous and
outdoorsy, historic and cultured, or
simply somewhere where they
speak English, there’s a place for all
prospective travelers. Study abroad
advisers and brochures can aid in
your searcn, but it s up to you to
lead the charge.
Students can take the reins by
heading across campus or across
the Web.
Just because you choose to go to
a Spanish-speaking country or a
Japanese-speaking country, does
not mean you need to know the
# language. With many programs, all
classes are taught in English.
Students choose from an array of
classes that go toward their
degrees. Classes are also taught on
a pass or fail basis and the passing
classes are credited toward a
requirement for your degree.
There are 21 countries available
through USC programs. If you
choose to go with an independent
provider there are important
questions to ask. Among them
include, the legitimacy, refund
policy, credit transfer of hours and
important contact information for
any extra questions one might
have.
At the USC study abroad Web
site, there is a listing of former
students who have studied abroad
■ within the past two years and
contact information. Former
students are always the best source
of information about what to
expect and what to bring.
T WUSC DESK
The Faint
Wet From Birth (Saddle Creek)
Break out your skinny white ties,
the Faint has returned with a
spanking new offering of chic new
wave revivalism. “Wet From
Birth” continues the trend of
evocative, sexual music that the band has laid
down on its previous three albums. Fans
frightened by the “Danse Macabre Remixes”
can take splace in knowing the band has
returned to a more organic sound — no cut
and-paste, throbbing Paul Oakenfold remixes
here. Actual guitar and bass make their way to
the forefront of the music, along with
trademark acidic analog synthesizers and
robotic yet sultry vocals. Bridging the gap
between electronic and rock focuses, “Wet
From Birth” is the most dynamic Faint album
to date. A powerful string section laced over
intense beats makes for urgent dance music, a
call to pound your feet on an ephemeral
dance floor. Amongst releases from like
minded peers like Radio 4 and !!!, “Wet From
Birth” is a timely reminder that the Faint are
still on the top of the black-clad heap.

Dizzee Rascal
Showtime (XL)
Most American hip-hop fans
are used to the rather
laconic, medium-paced
MC style exhibited by Jay
Z, Ludacris, or Juvenile.
Once a threatening movement, through
commercialization, hip-hop has become a
rather stable, predictable musical style. It’s
hard to imagine hip^hop outside the focus of
an American lens but in the hands of another
culture, hip-hop can be something completely
alien. Enter Dizzee Rascal and (for lack of a
better term) the UK hip-hop movement.
Rarely is something as culturally unsettling as
this form of hip-hop currently catching fire
across the Atlantic. The British appropriation
of hip-hop is a pastiche of reggae, drum-n
bass, experimental techno and the traditional
hip hop MC; but the major twist that occurs
in the British translation is simply the
awkwardness generated by an accent. Dizzee
spits vitriolic rhymes filled with UK slang over
the top of jagged, foreboding beats resulting
in a gritty, futuristic sound that is both
puzzling and engrossing. This is Dizzee’s
sophomore album, and at the ripe age of 19
he is set to be a long time purveyor of the
rapidly developing UK hip-hop culture.
Har Mar Superstar
The Handler (Record Collection)
There is no shame in dancing; in
your underwear, in public
places, it simply does not
matter. Dancing is an
inalienable, universal freedom
that everyone should be able to enjoy
without puritanical restrictions. .Har Mar
Superstar (Sean Tillman) proves that no
matter what shell one’s soul be trapped
within, killer dance moves and unbelievable
charisma are still obtainable goals. This
balding, overweight, bizarro Justin •
Timberlake gets down and shakes so hard
that he is stripped to his tighty whiteys by the
end of every live performance. Comparisons
to Justin are not that far off base, in fact; Har
Mar has penned tracks for J-Lo and Kelly
Osbourne. Har Mar’s own personal musical
vehicle is a glitzy purple Cadillac pumping
out sleazy, innuendo-filled funk and soul
jams. Karen O., arguably the analogous
female indie sex goddess to Har Mar’s male
machismo attack, sings on “Cut Me. Up.”
“The Handler” is the type of album everyone
occasionally needs to encounter — a
mindless, aesthetically pleasing, grab bag of
fun that serves as a reminder that milsic
shouldn’t always take itself so seriously.
