spot,” he continued. “For some
that makes well over an hour com
mute, and it puts undue stress on
them as students.”
Asma Baig, an incoming first
year student in chemistry and eco
nomics, is planning to park
around campus despite her lack
of a pass. “[Parking Services] said
there would probably be un
claimed spaces,” she said, “and
I’m hoping I get one of those.”
Foil said he’s used the shuttle
system before, “but more out of
boredom than as a mode of trans
portation.”
“My friends and I have ridden
the shuttle for conversation,0! he
said, °oobecause it’s a semi-private
place that’s quiet and there are no
interruptions of people getting on
or off.”
Foil said that, working as a
desk attendant at Preston, he’d
recommended the shuttle. “The
suggestion was shot down every
time,” he said, “because of the in
frequency of the shuttle stops and
unreliability of the shuttles.”
Additionally, many students
have off-campus business inac
cessible by university trans
portation. Foil said that, al
though he had a 21-meal plan last
year, he also worked two jobs he
might not be able to hold down

without personal transportation.
Baig said if she fails to find a
parking space, she’ll be forced to
quit her job.
For Foil, a working student
paying for his housing and edu
cation himself, quitting is not an
option.

Student’s
death still
unexplained

Investigators expect toxicol
ogy reports will explain why a
USC Honors College student
died after collapsing near
LeConte College on the morning
of July 22.
Richland County Coroner
Gary Watts said he expects test
results for Edmund Foley, 21, to
come back this week.
“We’re hoping that’ll show
something,” he said.
However, Watts said, there is
about a five percent chance the
reports won’t help investigators
reach a conclusion.
Foley, a Lexington resident,
died July 22 after he was trans
ported to Baptist Medical
Center. Witnesses said he col
lapsed on the LeConte walkway"
for no apparent.reason and be
gan turning red and gasping for
breath.
Watts said autopsy results
were inconclusive: “Nothing
was significant in the autopsy
that would show a cause of
death. .
