Hurricane Alex drenches Carolina coast THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Drenching rain and 100-mph winds rattled the Carolina coast Tuesday as Hurricane Alex passed over the region. Hatteras, N.C., picked up the heaviest rainfall at 3.73 inches, and a line of storms drenched parts of Virginia and Maryland. Isolated thunderstorms were reported in the Great Lakes and parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, but rainfall was mini mal. Scattered showers lingered in western Florida. Conditions were mostly clear through the Tennessee Valley and into the Deep South. In the nation’s midsection, a cluster of thunderstorms sparked severe weather across Iowa, where golf ball-sized hail fell. Storms racing across South Dakota also were severe at times, with Pierre, S.D., reporting wind gusts up to 80 miles-per-hour. In the W.est, light showers dampened the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies. Dry condi tions prevailed in the central and southern Rockies, the Great Basin and Desert Southwest. Tuesday’s temperatures in the lower 48 states ranged from a low of 30 degrees in Truckee, Calif., to a midday high of 103 in Mercury, Nev. Hacking allegedly admits to killing wife, hiding body Husband's lies shock family BY PAUL FOY ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER SALT LAKE CITY — The husband of a missing pregnant woman told a “reliable citizen witness” in the psychiatric ward that he killed his wife as she slept and then threw her body in a trash bin, according to a court filing. The document, released Tuesday by the Salt Lake County ■ Sheriffs Department, also says in vestigators found human blood on a knife in the bedroom of Mark Hacking’s apartment and on the couple’s headboard and bedrail. Blood found in the bedroom matched traces of blood found in Lori Hacking’s car, according to the statement. Mark Hacking was arrested Monday on a charge of aggravat ed murder, even though his wife’s body has not been found. Lori Hacking has not been seen since July 19, when Hacking said his wife failed to return from a morn ing jog. Investigators believe the 27 year-old wopian was killed in the couple’s apartment and that her body is buried somewhere in 3,000 tons of trash at the county landfill. Searches using dogs were to re sume Wednesday night. Mark Hacking, 28, has not been formally charged. A judge on Tuesday set bail at $500,000 cash without input from prosecutors or Hacking’s defense attorney, Salt Lake County District Attorney David Yocom said. While thousands of friends and volunteers turned out to search for the missing woman, police al ready were investigating her hus band and searching the couple’s apartment. According to the court filing, po lice found a mattress in a trash bin near the Hackings’ apartment that matched the serial numbers of the box spring recovered from inside the apartment. The statement did not say whether there was blood on the mattress. Police also said they have a re ceipt that showed Mark Hacking was buying a mattress less than 20 minutes after he first called po lice to report his wife missing. He had told her co-workers that he found her car in a park and was there looking for her. Days later, news organizations discovered that Hacking had lied about graduating from the University of Utah and lied about being accepted at a medical school in North Carolina, where the cou ple was to have moved within just days. Mark Hacking was hospitalized after he was seen running around naked outside a motel where he had taken a room, hours after making an emotional appeal on television for help in searching for his wife. Lori Hacking’s brother, Paul Soares, told “The Early Show” on CBS on Tuesday that the situation is unimaginable. “It’s been described as surreal and that’s really how we feel: a situation that you just can’t be lieve is happening,” said Soares. “It does come as a shock to me be cause we did know Mark for so long. But, at the same token, you just don’t know what someone’s capable of.” At a news conference to ex plain how prosecutors would pro ceed, Yocom said he is still re viewing the case and asked police to conduct more witness inter views. Yocom said he was uncertain he could file charges in the 72 hours required by law after Hacking’s arrest and may ask the court for an extension. Lori Hacking had told friends that she was five weeks pregnant, but police said she had not con firmed a home pregnancy test by visiting a doctor.
