USC parking
still an issue

A new garage across from East Quad will
mean more parking spots next August, but
this year students will have to do without the
gravel lot on Bull Street as construction con
tinues.
Even so, Derrick Huggins, deputy direc
tor of Vehicle Management and Parking
Services, said there shouldn’t be more of a
problem than last year. “It’ll be about the
same,” he said of the parking situation on
campus. “We’ve got another thousand spaces
coming in August.”
Although the new parking garage across
from the East Quad is built on an old gravel
lot, Huggins said he hopes more students will
look to alternative means of transportation.
“Of course, we try to encourage people to use
the shuttles,” he said. “Five thousand peo
ple used the shuttle system last year and we
hope to improve that. ”
Last year, the shuttles were subject to
more than $100,000 worth of upgrades, in
cluding $30,000 from the Student
Government budget surplus. The new up
grades will allow students to check the loca
tions of individual shuttles on their cell
phones, palm pilots or laptops.
Like many students, Mark Foil, a second
year motor development student, said he’s
had trouble finding parking in the past. “It
causes lots of problems,” he said.
“As far as I can tell, it’s luck of the draw,”
he said. “I’ve been a student for going on
three years and am just now getting a park
ing spot that I want. I’ve known several fresh
men, including out-of-state students, get
spaces instead of me.

Becker named as new provost

USC President Andrew
Sorensen appointed Mark
Becker, dean of the school of pub
lic health at the University of
Minnesota, as provost and exec
utive vice president for academic
affairs. Becker will take over as
provost Sept. 1.
“Mark Becker is a highly re
spected leader in the fields of pub
lic health and higher education,”
Sorensen said in a news release. “I
am confident that, with his experi
ence in the class
room, in the re
search laboratory
and in administra
tion, he will be a
strong, respected

ty and a valued Becker
member of my ad
ministrative team.”
The decision came after former
Provost Jerry Odom, who served in
that position since 1997, retired from
administrative duties last spring to
resume teaching chemistry at USC.
At Minnesota, Becker also
served as assistant vice president
of Public Health, Preparedness and
Emergency Response, as well as a
professor of biostatistics.
Becker served as a professor and
dean at the University of Michigan
before working at the University
of Minnesota. He has authored sev
ered articles and worked as an in
vestigator for the National
Institutes of Health and the
National Science Foundation.
Becker said in June that he an
ticipates the budget model will be
his biggest challenge as provost.
He said he supports budgeting
based on activity to create an “in
formation-rich environment.”
Becker was selected over Uday
Sukhatme, dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences at the State
University of New York at
Buffalo, and Robert Blocker, the
Lucy and Henry Moses Dean of
Music at Yale University, for the
position.
