the film occur when Moore
goes off topic to address the
Patriot Act and the invasion of
privacy afforded to some inno
cent individuals, but at the same
time these lapses provide a wel
comed lightheartedness com
pared to the intensity of the rest
of the film.
Overall, Moore is asking
viewers to react in some way to
what he’s presenting them, not
necessarily to agree with him.
The film’s opening credits show
a montage of Bush and members
of his administration having
make-up put on and preparing
to go on air, and at the end of the
film you see these same faces
unhook their microphones and
ear pieces and walk away.
I can only assume Moore is
trying to say to us that his film
is uncovering the lies and con
tradictions behind the make-up,
and now that these faces have
•walked away and his film is
over, it’s up to us to decide
whether it’s the “made-up” ver
sion or the Michael Moore ver
sion that we agree with and be
lieve in.

mix at 80 mph. Arkansas was
all farmland, mostly a lush shade
of green. While still retaining the
rolling hills of Tennessee, I could
begin to feel the land flatten out.
If you really want a sense of how
our country flows, you’ve got to
drive it and sense your pressure
on the accelerator gradually de
creasing.
The Hampton Inn at Little
Rock was all I expected: accom
modating, comfortable, and fea
turing the standard hotel shower
with squirt-gun water pressure.
But I was too jazzed, and too
tired, to care. The inherent
knowledge of my distance to
home was the spark of life that
had spurred me to leave in the
first place. I still would’ve left
home even if California were a
twisted wasteland full of
phonies.
Wait... bad example.
The point of the trip was to go
as far as I could go, and at the end
of the first day, I was a third of
the way there.
Next week: At the top of every
horizon
