ment.
“In general, tuition and state
appropriation do not directly sup
port research activities,” Pastides
said.
All 246 new faculty members
should be in place by 2010.
In addition, tuition dollars will
go toward merit- and need-based
scholarships, raising senior fac
ulty member salaries, expanding
student enrollment services and
improving information technolo
gy.
Tuition has risen steadily since
1997, usually by about two or
m r Ji
three percent per year. In 2002,
state budget cuts forced USC to
raise tuition by 17 percent and to
accept more students than the
university could house in
Columbia.
Last year, tuition dollars ex
ceeded state appropriations at
USC for the first time in universi
ty history.
USC has a total enrollment of
about 35,545 students on eight
campuses. More than 90 percent
of in-state students receive some
type of financial aid.

USC computer network to gain
SmartEnforcer security measures

Students returning to USC in
the fall will find a more secure
network when they log in on
their computers.
After virus attacks led to
many computers being shut
down and overwhelmed students
and computer technicians with
problems last fall, Computer
Services worked on a solution to
prevent the same situation from
happening again.
mey created bmarttniorcer,
which will he test-launched July
6 for 45 days before the fall se
mester begins. The pilot will run
specifically for East Quad dorms
during Summer II.
RAs will be given information
to help get set up, and flyers will
be sent out to assist students as
well.
students win nave to tog in as
always before they are able to
gain access to the network. They
will start at an Internet browser
window and be redirected to an
authentication page. Here they
will have to enter their network
username and password when
they first connect to the USC sys
tem, as they did last fall and
spring. A student’s network user
name is available online on VIP.
However, in order to complete
the authentication, students will
now have to download and install
the validation client. Instead of
being granted access at all times,
the system will have an icon stu
dents must use to log in or out.
For example, if the computer is
shut down for more than ten min
utes, students will have to log
back in by right clicking on the
icon to pull up the menu and re
gain network access.
Veronica Wilkinson, the in
formation technology security of
ficer, said she feels confident
about the launch.
“It’s got to go better than last
fall. I remember working into the
early hours of the morning help
ing students who had problems
then. This new system should pre
vent that kind of mess,” she said.
She has the SmartEnforcer on
her computer and says that it is
only noticeable when she has to
log back on, and then it serves as
a reminder that her computer is
protected. However, she still
warns students to be wary of e
mails with attachments they are
not expecting.
