Apartment safety varies in complexes around Columbia.
Safety varies
at apartments
BY ANNA HUNTLEY
THE GAMECOCK
The Cornell Arms apartment
building was a silent witness as
Joshua Boot, 24, of West
Columbia, lay dying from gunshot
wounds on April 29. Cornell Arms
security guard Jason Dickey car
ried the pistol that allegedly fired
the shots, even though Cornell
Arms security guards were not al
lowed to carry firearms. Boot,
who was unarmed, died that
evening at Palmetto Richland
Memorial Hospital.
The day before the fatal shoot
ing, a tenant’s overloaded power
strip had caused a fire on the
fourth floor of Cornell Arms, forc
ing the residents to evacuate the
building.
Yet Cornell Arms remains one
of the safest residences among the
apartments near campus, a sur
vey by The Gamecock revealed.
Because the S.C. Department of
Health and Environment Control
doesn’t regulate apartment build
ing safety, the following factors
were considered to determine the
safety of each apartment building:
the presence of a security staff;
building entrances accessible only
to residents; reports of theft or

reports of fire within the past
year; the presence of smoke de
tectors in each room; the presence
of at least one fire extinguisher
per floor; the presence of surveil
lance equipment; and residents’
feelings of overall safety. Using
these qualifications, The Place on
Greene was deemed least safe,

Summer crime at
USC still a concern
BY ELLEN TWEEDY
THE GAMECOCK
Students on campus for the
summer should be aware they
could fall victim to crime just as
easily as any other time of the
year.
Chris Wuchenich, the deputy
director of Support Services at
USC, said that during 2003 there
were 328 incidents on campus
from January to April, 174 inci
dents from May to August, and
369 incidents from September to
December.
During the fall, a high stu
dent-and-visitor population, due
to football games and events
such as the state fair, accounts
for the rise in campus crime. In
the summer months, the campus
empties out a great deal, and
there are almost no events draw
ing visitors to downtown
Columbia. However, crime still
exists on campus during this pe
riod.
There are 10 different kinds
of crime that the USC depart
ment tracks, from assault to bur
glary to the highest-reported in
cident on campus, larceny.
Wuchenich said that out of the
174 incidents on campus last
summer, 75 were larceny.
Students should also be aware
that there are as many crimes
committed during the day as
there are at night.
The daytime brings crimes of
opportunity, such as property
crime and auto theft. At night,
there are more likely to be
crimes of assault.
