WHISTLER REVISITED
New Columbia Art Museum exhibit celebrates work of an American master
BY MEG MOORE
THE GAMECOCK
In the 1997 film “Bean,”
starring the hilariously
British Rowen Atkinson,
one of America’s most
famed painters has his most rec
ognizable piece defaced by a blun
dering title character.
“Whistler’s Mother,” which
Bean is entrusted with presenting
at Los Angeles’ Grierson Gallery,
gets made over by Bean’s errant
brush. In the real world, however,
the legacy of James Abbot McNeill
Whistler would not be so easy to
paint over.
Marking the 100th anniversary
of Whistler’s death, “Whistler and
His Circle in Venice,” an exhibit
put on by the Corcoran Gallery of
Art in Washington, D.C., will open
at the Columbia Museum of Art
Saturday, bringing the work of an
American master to the Midlands.
Whistler’s acceptance of a com
mission in Venice in 1879 marked
a turning point in the famed
artist’s work, and brought him
into contact with a similarly mind
ed creative community.

etchings over a three-month peri
od by the Fine Arts Society of
London, Whistler remained in the
Italian town for more than a year,
turning out more than 50 etchings
and experimenting with a variety
of other media. His straightfor
ward images reestablished his
reputation as a skilled artist, and
his renewed vision enamored con
temporaries.
As Eric Denker, the Corcoran
Gallery’s Curator of Prints and
Drawings, remarked in a press re
lease, “Whistler’s Venetian work
is remarkable not only for its ex
traordinary aesthetic appeal but
also for its impact on generations
of later artists who represented
Venice.” Denker noted that
Whistler was the first to depict
non-tourist sites in the famed
city, and he also refused to re
verse his prints because “he
wished them to be viewed as
works of art, not tourist sou
venirs.”
“Whistler and His Circle in
Venice” will feature 20 of
Whistler’s etchings as well as
pieces by his circle of friends,
which included Charles Holloway,
James McBey and Joseph Pennell.
Six etchings by Canaletto illus
trating 18th century Venice will
also be displayed.
Upon returning with his Venice
work, Whistler was recognized as
a technical master and skilled
etcher, revitalizing his previous
ly slumping career. Whistler’s
stay in the historic Italian city not
only redefined his own life but also
affected the future of those who
saw his work and returned to their
own canvases with a renewed vig
or.
