USC’s Relay for Life aimsir $20,000 in donations
Participants in USC’s second
annual Relay for Life, sponsored
by the American Cancer Society,
are hoping to surpass last year’s
fund-raising total.
Faculty, alumni, student orga

will walk at the Blatt P.E. Center
soccer fields from 7 p.m. Friday to
7 a.m. Saturday. Their goal is to
increase awareness, research and
prevention of cancer, and to raise
money to aid the American
Cancer Society in its research. The
20 teams signed up for the event
have already surpassed last year’s
donations, raising $4,500 via e-mail
and online donations. The event’s
goal is to raise $20,000.
Relay for Life began 19 years
ago in May 1985. Gordy Klatt, a
surgeon, began a 24-hour walk-a
thon to raise money for the
American Cancer Society. The
event became so popular that to
day 3,800 communities and eight
countries participate. After inter

“This is not an inter-collegiate
athletic contest.”
Board members Darla Moore,
Michael Mungo and Sorensen
spoke with the students while the
Board was in session.
Sorensen said he was open to
bringing in outside consultants for
^ further studies, third-year profes
P sional student Anna Peacock said.
He said he was willing to meet with
the students whenever they wanted
to. The Board plans to vote some
time this summer.
Third-year professional student
Bryan Mayer said students feel left
in the dark as far as the merger
process.
“All we’ve been asking for is
facts from anyone and no one is
giving them,” he said. “The details
aren’t there.”
Sorensen met with USC faculty
members from the pharmacy
school Thursday. He released an
e-mail last week, which read that
USC’s pharmacy campus would
not be closing. He said a lot of the
student frustration is the result of
“unfound rumomming from
an original con; recommen
dation to close tumbia cam
pus, which Sonaid was flat
ly rejected. Hae was “dis
turbed by the dan” of facts.
“I keep sayinre not going
to lock the door »w away the
key,” Sorensen We are still
going to have face resident
instruction in Oia. Nothing
is going to chamat respect.”
In response icism of dis
tance educatioensen cited
USC’s graduatary science
program, whicbout 500 stu
dents enrolled, rent of which
are distance learners. Sorensen
said he ultimately wants to expand
to Greenville and that distance ed
ucation is crucial for practicing
pharmacists who need to know
about new drugs and research.
“Our world is changing in the
variety of ways to educate people,”
he said.
Administrators from both
schools established a research cam
pus foundation board, which in
cludes Medical University of South
Carolina President Ray Greenburg
and USC Board of Trustees mem
ber Mack Whittle. Sorensen said
they hope to have two committees
regarding curriculum and re
search established before the end
of the semester.
Sorensen said he wants to in
crease the number of trained phar
macists in South Carolina. There
has been no official 'study on the
numberjpf pharmacists needed in
the state. Vice President for re
search and the Division of Health
Sciences Harris Pastides said
some kind of work force assess
ment as to the pharmaceutical
needs of the state are necessary.
“I think it would be a relevant
piece of information as a work
force issue,” he said.
He said he planned to talk to
the pharmacy school dean to find
which group would be best to
study this. USC’s pharmacy
school projects a graduation of
110 students in 2004, and MUSC
plans to graduate about 90,
Pastides said.
Sorensen said he plans to give
a presentation on the merger at the
June Board of Trustees meeting.
“People are feeling territorial
right now and I hope we can move
past this.”

Carolina," she said.
Neither Jones nor Harvey was
present at the Wednesday board
meeting, and neither was avail
able for comment. USC students
had mixed reactions.
“It’s terrible — women need a
voice,” first-year public relations
student Angeliki Dimas said.
First-year biology student Matt
Allen agreed. “Women deserve
the same voice as men,” he said.
* First-year sports management
student Justin Dale said he
thought the Legislature was in the
————
right. “The Legislature does what
it thinks is best for the state, so it
should not be limited by gender,”
he said.
Student Government President
Zachery Scott said the legislature’s
decision was “disappointing,” and
that “while the Carolinian Creed
emphasizes the diversity that we
have on campus, it is disappoint
ing that the legislature does not
seem to do the same.
“Mrs. Harvey was a dedicated
member of the board, and now
that she’s gone, there is only one
woman and one African-American
left. It makes you pause.”
