Hunley CONTINUED FROM PAG? 1 ' At two news conferences Friday morning, each crewman’s facial re construction sat in the room over looking the submarine display. The first conference introduced descendents of three crewmen and of Queenie Bennett, who was be lieved to have been Lt. George Dixon’s sweetheart, who gave him his life-saving gold coin and began a fabled — and now tangible — love story. Mary Elizabeth McMahon from Atlanta is the great-great grand daughter of James A. Wicks. “This is very exciting to us, be cause we don’t have any photos of our great-great-grandfather,” she said of the facial reconstructions. Emma Busby Ditman of Silver Spring is Joseph Ridgaway’s great grandniece. “For me, it’s finding my fami ly,” she said of the Hunley project. “I’m really going to the funeral of a family member.” Crewman Frank Collin, who jtMfe jlMfc j+U. 4, had no children, was Rebecca Farence’s great-grandfather’s half cousin. Farence, who is from Harrisburg, Pa., said her ancestry has affected her elementary school sons’ outlook on the Civil War. “What they see is how I choose to look at this,” she said, explain ing that they know the crew to have been simply brave, strong men. The final descendant to speak was Sally Walker Necessary, Queenie Bennett Walker's great granddaughter from Midlothian, Va. “I know we’re not directly re lated, but this was someone who meant a lot to Queen,” Necessary said of Dixon. But as Sen. McConnell said, “The Hunley is more than just his tory. It’s about science and tech nology.” Doug Owsley, a forensic an thropologist from the Smithsonian Institution explained how isotopes were used to determine the diet of the crewman, which in turn re vealed that four were European, since their diets reflected cereal grains as opposed to the corn-fed iM JtU. M, JMfc jHl American diet. Genealogist Linda Abrams said more connections are made as the Hunley receives more attention. She said her work in tracing the history of the men has brought her close to them. “I really feel as though I knew these eight men. If Dixon walked in the room, I would know him,” she said. McConnell and artist Mort Kunstler then unveiled the oil-on canvas Hunley painting. “Someone might have to have his moustache shaved off, but I think it’s pretty accurate,” Kunstler said of his depiction. Civil War paintings are his specialty. “The Commission hasn’t yet bought it. I’d rather see it in this museum than over some rich guy’s couch,” Kunstler said. Sgt. Benjamin Gormley sat out side the conservation center Friday in full Confederate regalia, save for his business cards for “Battlefields and Broken Hearts: Original Poetry of Love and War.” ’ He wrote his poem, “The Men Who Served the Hunley”—which JMfc JM4. XU4. XM* JX* JX Jttt. he recited at White Point Gardens Saturday—in 1989 but added two verses after the sub was raised in 2000. Meanwhile, re-enactors were preparing for the next day at Magnolia Cemetery. Police cars rolled down the narrow roads, and chairs were arranged under the mossy trees. Friends from the Palmetto Battalion of re-enactors gathered around a pickup truck, dressed for battle. “I’m just glad I’m alive at this particular time to experience this. These guys have never had a fu neral,” said Leland Summers from Lancaster. Saturday’s ceremony was over by mid-afternoon, but the Hunley project is not nearly complete; the actual vessel has not been explored. Carefulness is a primary con cern to the researchers who still don’t know why the Hunley sank. As Abrams put it Friday, “(It’s) absolutely ongoing. I think this week we’re just pausing.” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecocknews@gwm.sc.edu Pharmacy CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 advance the mission of the col lege.” The merger report led to a student-organized protest at the State House last week of more than 300 pharmacy student worried that the merger could be a step toward phasing out any presence of pharmacy edu cation at USC over the next few years.
