Miss, 3-1.
“We didn't play poorly,”
Auburn head coach Tina Deese
said. “We just couldn't hit very
well today. Overall, we had a good
performance this weekend.”
The Tigers are 9-1 over their
last 10 games and carry an 8-1
record on the road for the 2004
campaign. Their match against
USC will be the first time the
Tigers will have faced a top-25
team this year, while the
Gamecocks have a respectable 3
4 record against such opponents.
^ Tiger Sara Dean is fourth in the
^SEC in batting average with a ro
bust .420, including four home
runs and 21 RBI. Dean's slugging
percentage also ranks fourth in
the conference at .704.
The Auburn pitching rotation
also features one of the top hurlers
in the SEC, Kristen Keyes. In 97
innings pitched this year, Keyes
leads the conference in both ERA,
with a miniscule 0.29, and oppo
nents' batting average, with a
stingy .109. Auburn also has two
other pitchers, Holly Currie and
Beth DiPietro, who are both in the
top 10 in the SEC in those same
categories.
With a pitching staff reminis
cent of the Braves' starting rota
tions of the '90s, the Gamecocks
hitters will have their hands full.
The USC offense has been some
what anemic this season, as the
Gamecocks are near the bottom of
the SEC in most offensive cate
gories, including a ranking eighth
in the conference with a team bat
ting average of .264. It will be in
teresting to see if the Gamecocks
can continue to put up just enough
offense to eke out more thrilling
victories.
Saturday's doubleheader is
scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., with
the second contest tentatively set
for 3 p.m. Sunday’s game starts at
1 p.m. The Gamecocks will then
travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to take
on the Volunteers in a three-game
series.
