schools.
However, knowledge of this pe
riod in history is not necessary to
appreciate the commemoration’s
events. Event organizer Patricia
Sullivan, professor of history at
USC, said the purpose of the com
memoration is to “inform the pub
lic of the decision as well as to cel
ebrate it.”
While the commemoration is
in tribute to the anniversary of
Brown v. Board of Education, an
other major case, Briggs v. Elliot,
□is also being addressed. This case
was named after Harry Briggs,
one of 20 parents who filed a law
suit against R.W. Elliot, president
of the Clarendon County ichool
Board. The symposiums will ad
dress three aspects of Brown v.
Board: the Briggs v. Elliot case,
school desegregation in South
Carolina and the legacy of Brown
v. Board.
Lawyers, plaintiffs and nu
merous others involved in the
Briggs and Brown cases will be
speaking at the event so that, ac
cording to Sullivan, the public
can “see people interested and in
volved in the struggles. This
gives people a more intimate and
complete perspective on history.”
One such speaker is Judge
Robert L. Carter. At the time of
the Brown decision, Carter was
Thurgood Marshall’s top assis
tant. Sullivan called Carter a
“brilliant intellectual — he’s 87,
still a sitting judge and has very
important thoughts on the case’s
current relevance.”
Carter, as well as the other
speakers, will address the issue of
Brown v. Board’s legacy, and how
even though the decision yielded
many positive changes, today’s
public school system is still bur
dened by flaws.
All events of the commemora
tion are open to the public. In ad
dition to the April 24 series of sym
posiums, the McKissick Museum
will open a Brown v. Board exhi
bition this August.
