Media arts students look for national acclaim

USC media arts students are go
ing places. In fact, they have trav
eled all over the world to show off
their artistic talents in festivals,
contests and symposiums.
USC assistant media arts pro
fessor Laura Kissel said all stu
dents should enter the contests
and festivals to show their work
and exhibit their skills. In addi
tion, it gives students a broader
audience to view their work.
“When students receive recog
nition, it benefits them,” said
Kissel, who is also a filmmaker
and media artist. “Our students
don’t get enough recognition."
Last year, a group of students
in the Film Production I class pro
duced a short film titled
“Developments," which won Best
Short Narrative at the Kalamazoo
Short Film and Video Festival.
“Developments” was also en
tered into seven other festivals
across the nation.
Angelique Gibson, who is now a
graduate teaching assistant at
USC, was one of the producers of
“Developments." She said the ex
perience was extremely beneficial.
Aside from winning $50 at the
Kalamazoo festival, “It means an
awful lot to put it on a resume —
it’s a big high to know people liked
your work," she said. “The more
films you put out, the more im
portant your name becomes."
Even though many students en
ter festivals and contests, there
isn’t enough participation, Kissel
said.
“I always want there to be more
— there aren’t as many as I would
like," she said.
However, Gibson said a lot of
students don’t enter these contests
because they think they won’t get
in, but she assures them this isn’t
true.
“There are so many different
festivals. It’s hard not to find one
to get into,” she said.
Not only do these contests and
festivals afford students the op
portunity to have other people
view their work, but it gives them
the chance “to have professional
experience and to network with
professionals," Kissel said.
Former student Joey Hall was
one of a few students who traveled
abroad to international film festi
vals in which he had submitted
his work. Going to the festivals
gave him the chance to participate
in the numerous events and par
ties held for the entrants, and he
also met with professionals, Kissel
said.
Not only do the students bene
fit from the film festivals, but USC
gains recognition as well, Kissel
said.
“Our program is getting recog
nition because of these festivals
and because of our faculty," Kissel
said. “We are increasing visibili
ty — everyone can see how great
(the media arts program) is."
The media arts degree program
encompasses production and the
ory in the world of media, which
includes film, video, screenwrit
ing, photography, Web and audio.
“We aren’t a film school," she
said. “In today’s world, you don’t
want one skill. We prepare students
in any area of media enterprise,
making them more employable.”
Students go on to work in
Hollywood companies and news
stations, as well as many other me
dia arts careers.
The next stop for the media arts
students will be the Nickelodeon
Theatre, where their films will be
screened May 7 at noon.
