Saturday marked another mile
stone for the USC basketball fami
ly. The 17,806 people in attendance
set a new record for any basketball
game ever in the state of South
Carolina, edging out last year’s
USC vs. Clemson women’s contest
that opened the then brand-new
Carolina Center.
USC will face a new hurdle this
week. The AP poll ranks the
Gamecocks 25th in the nation,
making this week the first time
any of USC’s current players have
played for a ranked team and the
first time USC has been ranked un
der Odom.
“I can’t think of a team that de
serves this more than this team
for what they did,” Odom said
Monday after the poll was re
leased. “It’s my job now to keep it
up, to keep them grounded, be
cause it’s not where you start; it’s
where you finish.”
USC will continue its road to
the finish line this Saturday
against LSU. Tip-off is scheduled
for 7:30 p.m. at the Colonial 1
Center.

Carolina track teams
win 6 at Kentucky
After a winless first day of com
petition, the tenth-ranked USC
men's and women's track teams
recorded six victories on day two
_ of the Kentucky Invitational on
B Saturday in Lexington, Ky. The
Gamecocks also recorded four run
ner-up finishes.
For the men's team, junior
Jonathan Fortenberry from
Marietta, Ga. won the men's 400
meter race, his first victory of2004.
Fortenberry notched the victory
with a time of 47.13, defeating the
nearest competitor by nearly two
tenths of a second. Senior Tony
Allmond finished second in the
long jump event on Saturday with
a j ump length of 24 feet 2.5 inches.
Also finishing in the runner-up
spot for the men was junior
Rodney Martin Jr., recording a
time of 21.11 seconds in the men's
200-meter race.
On the women's side Junior All
American Erica Whipple was the
^ Gamecocks' only multi-event win
B ner, winning both the 60-meter
race and the 200-meter race. In the
60-meter, Whipple recorded the
victory with a time of 7.44 seconds,
and in the 200-meter race won
with a time of 23.25 seconds.
Ronnetta Alexander took first
place in the 60-meter hurdles with
a time of 8.25 seconds, while
Stephanie Smith won the 400-me
ter race with a time of 53.60 sec
onds.
Rounding out the Gamecock
victory was the women's 4x400-me
ter “A” relay team with a time of
3:36.46.
Bathazi places twice
^ at Dallas swim meet
Senior Istvan Bathazi led the
USC men's swimming and diving
team to a fourth-place finish at the
SMU Classic in Dallas, Texas this
weekend. Bathazi took home sec
ond place in both the 200-meter in
dividual medley with a time of
3:53.92 and the 400-meter individ
ual medley with a time of 1:50.44.
As a team, the Gamecocks fin
ished fourth behind Florida,
Texas A&M and SMU. The men's
swimming team will return home
on Jan. 30 to take on Alabama.
Robinson gets MVP
at annual banquet
Friday night marked the an
nual football awards banquet at
USC. The event was held at
Seawell's on Rosewood Drive; over
800 people attended.
The most coveted award, the
team's MVP award, went this year
to graduating senior comerback
Dunta Robinson. Robinson ended
his Gamecock career with five in
terceptions and led the 2003 team
with 12 pass deflections. Draft ex
pert Mel Kiper Jr. has listed
Robinson as the first cornerback
to be taken in the NFL Draft.
Boasting a 4.0 fall GPA, junior
quarterback Mike Rathe was pre
sented with the team's academic
award. Rathe's cumulative GPA is
3.90.
The best attitude award went
^ to senior linebacker Rod Thomas,
^ while the most outstanding fresh
man award went to Cory Boyd.
USC head coach Holtz present
ed linebacker Jeremiah Garrison,
Robinson, tight end Hart Turner
and offensive tackle Travelle
Wharton with their captains'
awards as Robinson and Turner
presented the captains' address to
the crowd. Robinson and Wharton
will now turn their attention to
next week's Senior Bowl, in which
they will both play.
