Men’s CONTINUED FROM PAGE 20 Appalachian State 58, USC 78 The Mountaineers were the last nonconference opponents to get a spanking in Columbia this season, losing by 20 points on Jan. 2 and allowing USC to get every player in the game at one point or anoth er. Even guard Jon Land, expected to sit out the season due to medical problems, saw one minute of ac tion against ASU. Powell led the Gamecocks in points and re bounds for the game, botching 17 points and 11 rebounds. Yale 48, USC 59 On Dec. 30, Yale became the third Bulldog team to be defeated at the Colonial Center this season, joining Gardner-Webb and S.C. State. Yale didn’t make it easy for the Gamecocks, however, by go ing on a 21-7 run in the second half to close the Carolina lead to five points with six minutes remain ing. However, USC pulled it to gether and held on for the win, de spite poor shooting and getting out-rebounded by the Bulldogs. “It was a good test,” Odom said. “At times we played extremely well and at other times we didn’t.” S.C. State 50, USC 86 Carolina decided to put a big lump of coal in S.C. State’s stock ing on Dec. 22, hammering the Bulldogs by 36 points. Guard Mike Boynton led Carolina in scoring with a career-high 21 points, scored from four 3-point ers and nine free throws. This game marked the 12th time the two teams have met with Carolina winning each game. The closest the Bulldogs came to besting the Gamecocks was in USC’s one-point victory in the first game of the series in 1979. N.C. State 55, USC 58 Both guard Josh Gonner and forward Tarence Kinsey were back in action against N.C. State on Dec. 20, helping Carolina win a thriller in front of over 10,000 fans at home. Gonner played excep tionally well for the Gamecocks, hitting 8-of-12 from the field in cluding 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Kinsey came back to contribute nine points and six rebounds in the win. The difference in the game was made at the free throw line where USC hit 14-of-19 free throws for the game while N.C. State only hit three of its eight total free throws. Carolina held the Wolfpack scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, impressing Carolina’s head coach. “Early on, our defense was as good as it possibly could be this time of the year,” Odom said. “We played with a lot of ener gy today.” CSU 36, USC 71 The Gamecocks’ return to the Colonial Center on Dec. 17 fea tured a complete domination of the visiting Buccaneers. USC held CSU to just 18 points in each half while holding the Bucs to under 30 percent shooting from the field for the game. The excellent play from Carolina may not have been ex pected going into the game, since before the contest Kinsey was out with a concussion, Gonner had been suspended for team rules violations and guard Jerod Gerald withdrew from USC because he was ruled academi cally ineligible to play basketball for Carolina. USC 61, Temple 71 Carolina’s undefeated start crashed in Philadelphia on Dec. 15 where legendary coach John Chaney’s Temple Owls gave USC its only nonconference loss of the season. The Gamecocks were abysmal in the first half, shoot ing slightly less than 25 percent from the field and only scoring 17 points at halftime. The Gamecocks tried to make up for the 15-point halftime deficit, and though . they outscored the Owls by five points in the second half, they couldn’t bridge the gap. Boynton didn’t start because he had been at grad uation ceremonies in Columbia, but he got to the game in time for the tipoff and came off the bench to lead the team in points with 16 points and four steals. Boynton also accounted for four of « Carolina’s seven 3-pointers on the night. USC 76, Clemson 61 The Gamecocks’ victory over ^the Tigers on Dec. 6 gave USC its fourth straight win over Clemson and made Carolina 8-0 on the year. Powell led the team with 23 points, breaking his record for points scored in a single game. His previous top score was 21 points against Vanderbilt last season. - • Things didn’t look so rosy for Carolina in the first half as the team battled Clemson to the end but went into the locker room down by three points. The Gamecocks only shot 35 percent from the field in the first half but made up for the poor shooting in the second half. USC looked to fix its first half problems and did so, outscoring Clemson by 18 points, shooting over 50 percent from the field and hitting 17-of-18 free throws.
