Clemson selects Pete Yanily
to succeed longtime announcer
| BY PETE IACOBELLI
" THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
CLEMSON — Upstate broad
caster Pete Yanity was chosen
Tuesday to call Clemson football
this season, bringing a comfort
ing, familiar voice to Tiger fans
knocked back by the death of
longtime announcer Jim Phillips.
Yanity, a sideline reporter at
Clemson since 2001, has been a reg
ular figure in Upstate TV and ra
dio for more than a decade. He’ll
continue as sports director at
WSPA-TV in Spartanburg, where
he has worked the past 13 years.
He also will continue as host of the
TV show for Wofford coach Mike
Ayers. In addition to the play-by
play, Yanity will host the weekly
TV show for Clemson coach
| Tommy Bowden.
Phillips, 69, was known as “The
Voice of the Tigers.” He died sud
denly last week after an aneurysm
in his aorta. Only days earlier,
Phillips had called his 401st
Clemson football game in his 36th
year with the school.
“We’re never going to fill Jim’s
shoes,” said David Hubbard, gen
eral manager of Clemson Tiger
Sports Properties. “The tough part
of this is we still have to do games.
Clemson fans are familiar with
Pete and he’s familiar with the op
eration.”
Yanity will be in the booth
Saturday night when the Tigers
travel to Georgia Tech.
“I’m so honored, I’m so blessed
to have this opportunity, with all
due respect to how this opportu
nity came about,” Yanity said.
Yanity still mourns Phillips, a
friend and mentor. And it
would’ve been more difficult to
work through things at the mi
crophone had not Yanity sat in
last week’s Clemson broadcast,
which turned into a full-fledged
tribute of Phillips’ career.
Sports information director
Tim Bourret was asked by
Phillips’ family to call the game.
Phillips’ former sideline reporter
Rodney Williams returned to his
old role. Phillips’ close friend, for
mer “Voice of the Gamecocks”
Bob Fulton, called a Clemson se
ries that ended in a touchdown.
Bourret’s call was well received
by Clemson fans, some asking he
continue. However, Bourret said
the demands of his current job are
too much to make that possible.
Hubbard said there’s no time
frame to fill Phillips’ many duties
at Clemson. Phillips called more
than 2,000 Clemson sporting
events in football, men’s and wom
en’s basketball and baseball. He
also hosted football and men’s bas
ketball call-in radio shows and TV
shows each week.
The school and Clemson Tiger
Sports Properties, a joint venture
of Learfleld Communications and
ISP Sports, will conduct a nation
al search for the football job.
Hubbard said it might be 2004 be
fore a permanent football re
placement is found. As far as split
ting Phillips’ duties up, “your
guess is as good as mine,” he said.
Hubbard said Yanity’s name
would go into the mix of candidates
for the full-time job. “I think by do
ing it now,” Yanity says, “it’s as
good an audition as I can think of.”
For now, Yanity hopes he has
soaked up some of Phillips’ pro
fessionalism and style. Phillips’
strength was managing fans’
emotions about Clemson success
or failure. “He’s the guy who was
kind of driving the stagecoach
through all of that,” Yanity said.
“That’s a real credit that he was
able to do that for so many
years.”

game record with four touch
downs. He’s thrown that many
scoring passes twice more, in
cluding last week, against
Middle Tennessee. Whitehurst
ranks second in the Atlantic
Coast Conference and 19th na
tionally in passing.
Whitehurst was as crisp as
he’s-ever been, hitting on 23 of
28 passes to defeat the Blue
Raider^ 37-14.
“You kind of get in a zone
there in the middle of the game
and it feels like you can do any
thing you want sometimes”,
Whitehurst said.
South Carolina coaches think
they’ve got that same kind of
quarterback. Right now, though,
they’re not sure who that is. “I
don’t know, I don’t the answer,”
Skip Holtz said.

A Message from the
/Student Body Presidenr^v
g I had the opportunity to speak with several people
M at Computer Services about the recent computer
# virus attacks that have impacted many students here
r on campus. It was my pleasure to meet with Lorie Edwards,
The Director of Computer Services and her staff. \
After receiving a tour of the Computer Services
facility and learning a little more about the computer
network that everyone student on campus is connect
to, we discussed the recent virus attack on USC’s system
and the possibility of a long-term solution to future incidents.
I will be working with Lorie and her staff in order to use SG
to set up a program of prevention and awareness for
any future computer problems that may arise, due to viruses, ^k
shutdowns, ect. \
Student Government would like to commend the hard
working staff at computer services for their efforts in
the past few weeks to clean out more than 1,000
computers on campus.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the
office of Student Government for assistance.
