Lauren Weisberger’s debut tale
also draws its inspiration from ac
tual experiences. The author
worked as an assistant to Vogue
editor Anna Wintour. Supposedly,
the book’s fictional editor,
Miranda Priestly, exhibits an un
canny number of Wintour’s habits
and character traits. Amazed by
the wealth of the world she works
in, narrator Andrea Sachs gawks
at the money spent on clothes, the
famous-name company kept and
the perfect appearances of those
that surround her.
Editor Miranda Priestly’s out
rageous demands and fickle
“needs” spawn a variety of comic
moments, yet the novel is overtly
cynical in its depiction of the fash
ion elite. Unlike “The Nanny
Diaries,” “The Devil Wears
Prada” has no endearing Grayer
type characters to warm its some
times sardonic tone. Yet it is still
an entertaining look into the lives
of those who have the world’s top
designers on speed dial.
Neither novel will endure as a
modem classic, and in their quest
for light-hearted satire, neither as
pires to. But both books provide a
welcome diversion to the every
day world of school, work and
mass retail shopping. Prepare to
literarily experience life with an
uptown address and indulge.
