Carolina Welcome Week offers plenty of fun for all

You’re all moved in, your par
ents have left and you still have
nearly six days until classes be
gin. You might be asking yourself
how you’re going to fight boredom.
Well, at USC there’s plenty to do
before classes start — plenty of
time to enjoy Carolina Welcome
Week. You can find a full listing of
the week’s events in the enclosed
tab.

First Night Carolina
From cheerleaders to food, from
music to dancing, the Student Life
along with other student organi
zations will sponsor a night filled
with fun activities for freshmen
Saturday, Aug. 16. It’s a great op
portunity to meet other freshmen
and have a relaxing, fun time after
a stressful day. “It is our goal to
welcome the students to USC,
make them feel a part of the
Carolina community and to show
them a good time on their first
night at USC,” said Catherine
Lockhart, director of Parent
Programs and assistant to the di
rector of Student Life. “It’s a great
way to start your Carolina experi
ence,” Lockhart said. Freshmen
are asked to meet in front of the
Russell House at 9 p.m. Saturday.
Colleges’ Open Houses
The academic colleges of USC
will haye open houses beginning
1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17. The
open houses give students and
their families a chance to meet
deans and faculty. “I think it’s a
just a way to personalize the col
lege for the students and their fam
ilies. Most will have met academic
advisers and some faculty during
the summer,” said Char Davis, di
rector of Enrollment Management
Services. Each college will be hav
ing their open house at different

Fraternity Recruitment
Also Sunday, Aug. 17, fraterni
ties will begin recruiting for the
fall 2003 semester. Recruitment be
gins with a quick orientation
meeting Sunday. Potential frater
nity members can learn about
Greek Life at USC during the be
ginning of the week. There is open
rush on Tuesday and Wednesday,
which is when participants get to
visit the fraternities they like.
Thursday, Aug. 21 is the invitation
round where participants are in
vited back to certain fraterni
ties.Bid day is Friday at noon in
the Russell House Ballroom. On
bid day, the participants can pick
up their invitations to join.
“Participating in fraternity re
cruitment is a great way to meet
people and begin to get involved
at USC,” said Mason Reuter, coor
dinator of Greek Life.
Sorority Recruitment

An orientation meeting also
kicks off Sorority Recruitment
Week - Sunday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.
in the Russell House Ballroom.
The participants will be broken
info groups of 15 with an older sis
ter to guide them throughout the
week. Actual recruitment takes
place on Tuesday, Wednesday,
Friday and Saturday afternoons,
where the girls will meet several
sororities and their sisters. “Bid
day is Sunday, Aug. 24 when girls
will receive a bid from their new
chapter and will greet their sis
ters, as in tradition, on the
Horseshoe,” said Katherine
Heller, Sorority Council

Freshman Council
Informational Meetings
On Monday, Aug. 18, and
Wednesday, Aug. 20, Student
Government will hold an hour-long
informational meeting for fresh
men interested in Freshman
Council. Freshman Council is a
group of 35 freshmen selected by a
panel of student leaders. The panel,
appointed by the previous year’s
Freshman Council, selects the
group through an application and
interview process. Freshman
Council co-adviser Katie Laird said
one of the goals she and Freshman
Council co-adviser Katie Page had
this year was “to have members
from several organizations come
and talk to Freshman Council so
that the students know about ev
erything else on campus to get in

Free Shuttle to Wal-Mart
and Sonic
On Monday, Aug. 18, The Shack
Christian Campus Ministry will
provide a shuttle to Wal-Mart and
a quick trip to Sonic. “It’s intended
for freshmen, since they normally
have the greatest need. However,
we’ve had a handful of upper
classmen in the past two years
who simply needed a ride like ev
eryone else. We are more than will
ing to accommodate any student
in need,” said Garrett Curry, min
ister for The Shack Christian
Campus Ministry. Meet in front of
the Russell House at 6 p.m. for
