the council are out of town. The
, agreement will be on the council’s
agenda for next Wednesday.
After the City Council signs the
agreement, the Design
Development and Review
Commission as well as the
Planning Commission must con
cur before construction begins.
Part of the deal between USC
and the UNA involves the reno
vation of Kirkland Apartments
and the Black House, historic
buildings currently uninhabited.
The deal allows the Black House
to be used as the inn’s lobby, and
the Kirkland Apartments will
house visiting faculty.
The plan also physically moves
a wood frame cottage from
University Foundation property
to a private residential zone.
Sinclair said the Planning
Commission will look at the agree
ment to see how it affects traffic
in addition to general aesthetics
of the construction and renova
tion projects.
Sofensen said he knew the ho
tel has drawn criticism, including
anti-USC legislation in the Senate.
But Sorensen remains adamant
in his efforts. “If Clemson can
have a hotel on its campus,” he
said, “then it’s appropriate for us
to have one.”

receive signals becomes greater,
driving an increased demand for
engineers with these skills.
“There is a shortage for sig
nal-integrity engineers not only
nationally but all across the
world,” said Brian Knotts. “This
program could open the doors for
Columbia to be a domestic
growth site.”
“Within two weeks, the 25
open seats for the program were
full,” said Knotts, board manager
of Intel’s Columbia Design
Center. “The program will at
tract students who ordinarily
would not come to USC.”
Students will complete the pro
gram with eight other electrical
engineering courses.
Intel donated $33,000 worth of
high-speed computer worksta
tions and other equipment to the
program. Ansoft Corporation
will contribute high-perform
ance electronic design automa
tion (EDA) software, valued at
$100,000. Chen, who will be teach
mg these courses
in the fall, said
the street value
is $2 million.
“This will help
all other existing
research and pro
vide USC with
more credibility
with industry
and academia,” said Knotts.
Graduates will succeed on sev
eral fronts, said Abhi Talwalkar,
vice president of Intel’s Enterprise
Platform Group.
“Graduates of this program,
whether they study at the uni
versity or through its long-dis
tance learning program, will be
well positioned to fill the world
wide need for engineers in this
field, at Intel and elsewhere,”
said Talwalkar.
Intel employees and other stu
dents will be able to take cours
es through the university’s dis
tance-learning program.
Students worldwide can audit the
courses, enroll at the university
or take the new courses for credit
as they pursue master’s degrees
in electrical engineering at other
institutions.
“there is a flood of Intel em
ployees worldwide willing to
take the courses via distance
learning,” Knotts said.
Since USC has developed the
new signal-integrity program,
Intel has invited the university,
along with other
prestigious uni
versities such as
Stanford, to travel
to their various
education career
fairs.
Intel’s
Columbia campus
is becoming a cen
ter of excellence for signal-in
tegrity expertise within Intel’s
Enterprise Products and Services
Division. Intel employs 160 peo
ple in Columbia. The world’s
largest chip designer, Intel is also
a leading manufacturer of com
puter, networking and communi
cations products.
Richard Mellitz and Hao Li
from Intel’s Columbia center will
teach the first of two courses this
.«k
fall. Chen, Jerry Hudgins and
former USC Vice Provost for
Research Paul Huray will teach
the second half of the program in
the spring.
