Mike Roman, the environ mental protection manager for University Housing, says that the electrical vehicles are mainly an attention-grabber. “We got the electrical vehicles to make people pay attention to our efforts to make the universi ty more environmentally re sponsible,” Roman said. Roman also wants the electri cal vehicles program to serve as a role model for the rest of the uni versity — he said it might en courage other departments to be environmentally friendly. The electrical vehicle pro gram began more than two years ago, and in the coming months Facility Services, the universi ty post office and Parking Services will be using at least one of the four electrical vehi cles. Roman is also involved in making sure students in univer sity housing have the ability to recycle while on campus. Roman organized the waste management for students mov ing out of university housing at the end of the spring semester. The plan, called Move Out 2003, has had collection bins placed on every floor in every residence hall for electronics, clothes, and other items. Some residence halls had areas to deposit furni ture. Also, the waste management program at the nearly complete Greek Village is almost up and running. According to Laura Pergolizzi of USC Environmental Services, the Greek Village will have full recycling capabilities by mid-fall. Interest rates for out-of-school Stafford loans are down to 3.42 percent from 4.06 percent while in-school rates for the loan are down to 3.86 percent from 4.46 per cent. Interest rates for PLUS loans are down to 4.22 percent from 4.86 percent. Stafford loans let students bor row on their own credit, whereas PLUS loans allow parents to bor row on behalf of their child. The new rate will affect student loans taken out after October 1, 1998. Loans taken out before that date will be slightly higher. But graduating students might want to think twice before con solidating their loans, Miller said, because they could lock them selves into the current rate and miss out on lower rates if the econ omy improves. No one can consolidate loans more than once, Miller said. “There’s no deadline for debt consolidation any year,” said Sallie Mae spokeswoman Erin Korsvall.
