CD REVIEW
‘Beneath the Beret’
is a small wonder
“BENEATH THE BERET”
Alderman Douglas
★★★★ out of ☆☆☆☆☆
BY BRIAN RAY
THE GAMECOCK
It’s not every day you see a CD
cover with Columbia’s micro-ma
chine skyline in the background.
At Cool Beans on College Street, I
leaned over the counter and saw
what seemed like some local
yokels’ self-congratulating and
premature debut. But there was
something different about them.
Maybe in New York where in
die bands sit in dark alleys wait
ing to slingshot their latest self
produced release into your back
pack, this kind of thing isn’t that
special, but I was intrigued. I took
a copy and made my latte a to-go.
By the time I'd pulled into the
driveway the CD had played twice.
Despite the album’s five songs I
didn’t feel cheated. Lead singer
Alderman Douglas’ voice bears an
uncanny resemblance to Led
Zeppelin’s front man Robert Plant.
And I could see lead guitarist Nic
Thompson following in the foot
steps of the larger-than-legend
Jimmy Page.
It was a pleasure to hear a local
musician my age who could play
the guitar rather than some jerk
hammering out a bunch of power
chords.
Violin accompaniment by
Jesse Grosse gives the slower
songs “What Makes You Cry” and
“Come Down Angel” smooth
edges. Grosse isn’t the bland, to
ken accompanist who plays a few
notes in key and fades away. You
hear the instrument sing backup
to the pronounced and nuanced
Douglas with the confidence of
someone who’s been performing
with the Academy of St. Martin in
the Fields for 10 years.
