take and do something.
aiso, tnese
kids need to un
derstand that for
every Kobe
Bryant and
Kevin Garnett
there is a Lenny
Cooke or Garnett
Korleone Young.
Do you know who these guys
are and what they’re doing
now? I thought so.
Lebron James is probably the
best player in the draft, but it’ll
take four years and a couple
more lottery' picks for Cleveland
to stand a chance of getting out
of mediocrity.
I want to see more guys like
Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich
be rewarded for staying four
years and improving. These
guys would be much more im
portant to the development of a
Denver than any _
one-year colle
giate or high
school player.
I don’t see how
it will be more
fun to watch
James struggle
, , .. Colllson
and learn the
game than to see
Collison help a team get over the
edge and make a title run.
To say I don’t like the NBA is
untrue, but the changes to the
game have lessened my interest.
I’m not saying the NBA is bad,
but it lacks what grabbed my at
tention in the past.
The draft is just a great ex
ample of why I’m not thrilled
with pro basketball. Will the
game change for the better? I
doubt it, hut neither will my
feelings of nostalgia.

Stanford, which overcame a
second-round CWS loss to reach
the final series and then forced a
third game against Rice, lost in
the championship game for the
third time in four years.
In their last title game appear
ance, the Cardinal lost 12-1 to Miami
in 2001. That loss tied the previous
record for largest margin of deficit
in the CWS championship.
Freshman left-hander Mark
Romanczuk gave up the three runs
in the first inning. Five innings and
five pitchers later, the Owls led 11-0.
Humber (11-3) retired the first
seven batters he faced before Brian
Hall doubled in the third. He then
set down 10 of the next 12 before
Garko doubled in the seventh and
later scored to end the shutout bid.
Humber walked two and
struck out four in the first cham
pionship game complete game
since Louisiana State’s Brett
Laxton beat Wichita State in 1993.
Humber worked largely in the
shadows of Niemann and
Townsend most of the postseason.
He lasted just 3 2-3 innings in Rice’s
54 win over Texas last Wednesday.
While Humber hummed
along, Romanczuk (12-2) struggled
from the start. He threw 46 pitches
and walked five as Rice sent nine
men to the plate in the first.
The Owls, who had six hits
and two walks against four pitch
ers in the sixth, tied a champi
onship game record with their
seven-run inning. It was the
biggest outburst since Southern
California had a seven-run inning
while beating Missouri 8-7 in 1958.
Chris Kolkhorst, who doubted
twice in the inning, drove in two
runs with his second one. Janish
also had a two-run double, and
Cruz hit a two-run single. Dane
Bubela drove in another run with
his base hit.
Graham lamented the Ovft&’
lack of success in Omaha during
their previous three trips when
they went a combined 1-6.
“He’s been waiting for this his
whole life,” first baseman Vincent
Sinisi said. “’He got the junior col
lege championship, but he’s been
waiting for this for 13 years and
we finally gave it to him.”
