“VONRAY"
VonRay
BY MEG MOORE
THE GAMECOCK
Amidst the current influx of
distortion-tinged modern-rock
records, an emerging band must
be innovatively expressive to gain
recognition as anything more
than a copycat group in search of
a quick hit.
Offering listeners a solid, if in
distinguishable, Elektra debut,
VonRay’s self-titled release hits
music fans just as they are start
ing to grow tired of the same old
sound.
And indeed VonRay’s latest al
bum stays true to a well-tread for
mula.
It is not the blueprint sound of
“what’s hot now” that it is con
forming to, however, but the sea
soned rock style that it’s solidified
during the past decade.
VonRay was originally a solo
act — it served as current lead
singer Vaughn Rhea’s stage name
— and expanded into a multimu
sician outfit in 1993.
The debut from the band, based
out of Orlando, Fla., evidences the
solid ability to craft songs th^t has
made it a Florida favorite over the
years.
Featured on the WB series
“Smallville,” the album’s first
single, “Inside Out,” is your
standard top-40-achieving rock
tune.
The rest of the album resounds
with the same radio-ready sound,
offering listeners an unsurprising
— but certainly enjoyable — 40
plus minutes of music.
There are no acoustic ballads
here; though the tracks range in
tempo, they are all heavily in
strumented.
The album’s lyrics range from
the adolescent — “I just think
you’re strange” — to the spiteful
— “I only hope you feel my dis
content.”
And naturally, there’s the req
uisite crack at the superficiality
of it all — “Man, we love your
sound. Yeah, we love your hair.”
Though often predictable, the
album is thick with sing-along
melodies; it riffs with enough
edge to resonate on rock radio
playlists.
VonRay has helped sustain
the Orlando music scene for sev
eral years, and it is refreshing to
watch the band finally get its
due.
The group’s Elektra debut con
tains a slew of single-worthy
songs that vary from the angry
“Stranded” to the sensitive con
fessions of “I’m Learning. ”
The band’s gradual rise exem
plifies the maxim that hard work
pays off — unfortunately, it might
be paying off too late to reap much
standout success.

HOROSCOPES
ARIES Before you can advance,
you’ll need to take care of
business close to home. Don’t
cut comers. Do it right, or it’ll
take even longer.
TAURUS Don’t put a lot of extra
stuff on your agenda for today.
Give yourself a break. Just
making ends meet will be
difficult enough.
GEMINI It’s time for a change,
and you’re liable to be the one
who makes it happen. Stand up
for basic values. Others are
listening.
CANCER Don’t assume you’re
so smart thcit you can break
the rules. Listen and leam so
that you’ll know what to
expect.
LEO Your friends are behind
you 100 percent, and that’s a
wonderful feeling. However,
don’t goof off and forget to do
your job.
VIRGO Stay in communication
with the person in charge of
the cash. The two of you need
to keep a lid on everyone else’s
spending.
LIBRA You’re finding out the
inside story on a lot of different
topics. The more questions you
ask, the more secrets you’ll
learn.
SCORPIO Others are making a
lot of noise but not really
saying anything. They’re
letting you know how much
they know, and how much they
don’t. Continue to listen
carefully and take notes.
SAGITTARIUS The debate is
made even more interesting by
the fact that sometimes your
adversary is right. To show
you’re wise as well as smart,
adopt the suggestions that
work.
CAPRICORN You’re still way
too busy, but tomorrow should
be better. Prepare to delegate,
and you’ll be even more
efficient.
AQUARIUS When you’ve
settled on rules that work for
you both, you’ll find that life
becomes a lot easier. You’re
building a structure to depend
upon, so put in the time that’s
required.
PISCES While juggling career
and home life, ever wonder
which side will win? Home life,
of course. But it may take some
fancy dancin’ to get much free
time at home during this busy
week.
