Student Government Voters’ Guide
ELECTIONS 2003
PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
Katie Dreiling
Age: 21
Hometown: Irmo
Year and major: Third-year political-science student
Activities: University ambassador, Student Government safety director, student
liaison to the Board of Trustees, philanthropy chair for Kappa Kappa Gamma
sorority, orientation chair for freshman council, USC Mock Trial team member,
University Safety Committee member, SG vice president
Platform:
♦ Encourage Parking Services and university officials to look for outside funding
for more parking garages and renovations
♦ Form a community-sen/ice board to aid service groups on campus and
improve how well SG communicates with those groups
♦ Reorganize SG to get more students involved
Quote: “I have a lot of faith in Student Government that it can be an effective
organization and it can help the students if it is just pushed in the right
direction. I just want to be given the opportunity to show I can make those
changes and can make that difference.”
Brian Murphy
Age: 20
Hometown: Aiken
Year and major: Second-year computer-science student
Activities: Maxcy College hall government.
Platform: “Doom”
♦ No SG reform; SG is capable of serving the student
body as it is and does not need to constantly reform
itself
♦ Against eliminating freshman parking
♦ Grow a beard and dye it black
Quote: Murphy said he doesn’t want Student
Government “disappearing just right after the election and popping up again a few weeks before spring break,
when elections start picking up.”
W ■ > V.*
Tim Roberts
Age: 21
Hometown: Laurens
Year and major: Third-year media-arts student
Activities: Section leader in the USC .marching band
Platform:
♦ Establish more communication between the students and SG by holding open
questioning sessions where students could voice their opinions on important
issues.
♦ Create a student seat on the Board of Trustees
♦ Against eliminating freshman parking because, he says, it would decrease the
number of incoming freshmen, and a smaller student body would lead to higher
tuition.
♦ Add bicycle paths and more shuttle routes on campus
♦ Develop a student security council to help the USC police eliminate suspicious
activities on campus and make improvements such as increasing campus lighting
♦ Reorganize how the student-activity fee is distributed to student organizations
because some organizations are getting more than they need while others aren’t
getting enough
Quote: “I’m just trying to get the students’ opinions to where they need to get to be
heard and be known so that something can be done about them.”
Tyler Odom
Age: 20
Hometown: Anderson
Year and major: Second-year political science student
Activites: SG senator, SG Athletics Committee member, Student Gamecock
Club treasurer
Platform: “The Garnet 6"
♦ Send a student liaison to the General Assembly
♦ Lobby the General Assembly to tone down budget cuts for higher education
♦ Establish a student voting member on the Board of Trustees
♦. Improve safety on campus by regularly checking call boxes and using SG
funds to increase the lighting on campus
♦ Encourage the administration to stop eliminating metered spaces,
specifically in the Bull Street Garage
♦ Paint spurs on the road from Greene Street all the way to Williams-Brice
Stadium
Quote: “A lot of people are going to possibly say that these things can’t
happen. I think they are possible. They’ve happened at other schools, and
you’ve just got to know how to go about doing it. You’ve got to know how to
work the system.”

CIMONS
Justin Simmons
Age: 20
Hometown: Columbus, Ga.
Year and major: Cecond-year political-science student
Activities: Freshman Council
Platform:
♦ Change the representation system so that it reflects student organizations,
not colleges
♦ Give out parking spaces based on class rank
♦ Return the student activity-fee surplus to the students
♦ Make SG inclusive of everyone on campus
Quote: “For one, I’d like to make it (SG) less like a club, and I definitely don’t
think it should be the primary source of anyone’s involvement on campus.”
Ginny Wright
Age: 21
Hometown: Smyrna, Term.
Year and major: Third-year Russian and English student
Activities: SG member for three years, Carolina Crew, Freshman Council,
Emerging Leaders Program, Omicron Delta Kappa honor society, Dance
Marathon, community-service leadership
Platform:
♦ Overhaul SG before it can start dealing with issues such as parking and
budget cuts
♦ Reach a certain level of efficiency that is missing from SG and use that new
efficiency to lobby the administration to give SG more power
♦ Reform the committee system and cut spending
♦ Establish better relations between SG and city and state governments and
policymakers
♦ Break down how activity-fee is used so students can see where their money is
going
Quote: “What sets me apart from other candidates is I have a realistic vision.
Every candidate has goals, but I have realistic goals and the determination to
follow them."
