Chimera class teaches women self-defense
BY WENDY JEFFCOAT
THE GAMECOCK
On Wednesday evening, 10
women gathered at the Chimera
self-defense workshop to learn
how to better defend themselves
against potential attackers.
Chimera identifies the most
practical and appropriate meth
ods of self-defense, both mental
and physical, that women can use
to better prepare for a situation
in which they feel threatened.
It combines martial-arts de
fense with verbal techniques to
help women learn to use their
voices and their bodies to ward off
potentially hazardous situations.
“There’s been a lot of interest,
for a program that was woman
centered,” said Bronwyn McNutt,
a third-year computer-science stu
dent and the event’s organizer.
McNutt is treasurer of the Women
Students’ Association, the group
that sponsored the event.
She said she learned “that be
ing nice to people is something
that you don’t have to do.” McNutt
said it’s OK to be polite, but that
ho one has to smile and appease
someone “just because they exist.”
“I don’t think I’m any safer
than I was before, but I am better
equipped to deal with situations,”
she said.
Karen Sundstrom, a certified
Chimera instructor and an advo
cate with Sexual Trauma Services,
said Chimera has existed since
1980. It was formed by a group of
women in the Chicago area who
were dissatisfied with the defense
programs available for women.
The programs mostly dealt with
situations men found themselves
in, and most of the strategies and
techniques focused on men’s
strengths and abilities, not wom
en’s.
Sundstrom said Chimera has
instructors teaching in Chicago,
Wisconsin, New Jersey, North
Carolina and South Carolina. She
said she has been actively involved
in women’s self-defense since she
was in her 20s; she has been a
Chimera instructor since 1990.
She said a Chimera is a mythi
cal beast in Greek mythology that
could change its shape.
Sundstrom said the positive side
of Chimera is “that women can
use whatever tool, if necessary, to
keep themselves safe in situa
tions.”
She said she wants women to
realize their intuition and gut feel
ings are reliable, and they should
pay attention to them.
“It’s not that women don’t listen
to their gut instincts,” Sundstrom
said; “it’s when they do listen to
their gut instincts, other people tell
them, ‘You’re being paranoid.’ ”
Sundstrom said the dynamics
and conversations in the Chimera
class are used because “they’re
connected to what really happens,
which very seldom looks like the
story that’s in the news or on the
television.”
She said Pauline Bart, author
of “Stopping Rape,” has inter
viewed women who were success
ful in warding off attackers. The
Chimera class uses techniques
Bart found that could help stop at
tacks: reacting to early behavior,
reacting quickly to someone who
is intruding on you or invading
your space, being more forceful,
yelling and not screaming, using
some kind of physical response,
and getting to safety quickly.
Sundstrom said she tries to con
nect what she sees with survivors
of sexual assault with what she is
teaching to the class.
“I will see a situation and al
ways ask, ‘Am I doing anything in
my class that would have helped
this woman in this situation?’ “
she said. “If I’m not connecting
that, then I’m not doing a very
good job.”
Another Chimera workshop
will be offered tomorrow from 1 to
4 p.m. at the Blatt Physical
Education Center.

before they go to students and some
are more willing to share,” he said.
“The parking people are constantly
trying to balance all the interests.”
Wilcox said the faculty is as
concerned with parking problems
as students are.
“Parking is always an issue
that gets the attention of any em
ployees,” Wilcox said. “There is
the potential for controversy.”
Student Government President
Ankit Patel said he does not sup
port the act.
“I think it’s ridiculous,” Patel
said.
Patel said he thought the legis
lation was badly written and poor
ly researched.
“I refuse to believe that in four
pages, the Student Senate can re
form the parking system here on
campus,” Patel said.
Patel said he suspected that up
coming elections were influenc
ing the Senate’s voting.
Patel also said Shipman over
estimated the act’s chances of suc
cess when he said the administra
tion’s approval is a sure thing in
a speech before the Senate.
“If the Senate had that kind of
power, we’d be doing a whole heck
of a lot more, ” Patel said.
Patel said SG should work with
the Board of Trustees instead of
telling it what to do.
Even so, Patel said his stance
has nothing to do with Shipman,
who spearheaded a movement to
subpoena and impeach the presi
dent earlier this year.
“I commend J.D. for everything
he’s done,” Patel said of
Shipman’s efforts to solve parking
problems. “I just think we need to
include the administration in the
process.”
The act is expected to go before
the Residence Hall Association
and university administration in
the near future.

die stressful situations,” he said.
“I’m someone people can take se
riously, and the job will get done. ”
Billy Grooms, a second-year
pharmacy student, leaves every
organization he visits with the
same words.
“I know the job of treasurer is a
big job, but I’m a big man,” he
said.
Grooms said one advantage he
will have if elected treasurer is that
his experience will make it easy
for him to learn the details of the
position. Grooms has served as the
second vice chairman of finance
for the Student Senate, and he
worked on rewriting the constitu
tion and finance codes. Grooms is
also vice president of Christian
Pharmacists Fellowship Interna
tional and secretary of the
Academy of Students of Pharmacy.
His platform is designed to
make sure money is being dis
tributed to organizations that are
doing their jobs and that it is not
being wasted. He breaks his plans
down into three parts: First,
Grooms plans to create a system
to allow organizations to use mon
ey for good purposes — ones that
would create more money for
them if he is elected, he says. He
intends to communicate with the
Board of Trustees about the bud
get cuts and design creative solu
tions with students’ input. And he
plans to avoid wasteful spending
by seeing that money distributed
comes back to the campus.
Grooms, who says he has been
set on attending USC nearly all his
life, appreciates the area’s friend
ly atmosphere.
“I love the students; I love
working with the students, and if
elected, I would love serving the
students,” he said.

nancially independent.
“I wasn’t a great student, but
I did what I needed to get by, and
while I was there, I did a lot,”
Bauer said. “I was already buy
ing real estate and learning a lot
of business knowledge.”
As a college student, he was a
USC cheerleader, a member of
the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraterni
ty and 1989 Mr. USC. He was also
involved in selling sports mem
orabilia and buying real estate,
the latter of which he still does
today.
Bauer said he had never tak
en a law or political-science
class, so he knew little about pol
itics when he first ran for office
in 1996 at age 26, but he ap
proached the field from a totally
different view.
“I sold and marketed Andre
Bauer,” he said. “I knew about
sales and business, but not
much about the political side. I
got the name Andre Bauer out
there.”
In an interview at his State
House office, Bauer said he en
joys speaking to students about
ways to market and promote
themselves. As the youngest lieu
tenant governor in the nation,
Bauer has faced many chal
lenges. But he made it clear to
students that it is up to individ
uals to determine their own suc
cess.
“Don’t let people deter, you.
Never let age or anything else
hinder you,” Bauer said. “People
who tried to discourage me ac
tually motivated me to work
harder, which made the rewards
even greater. It depends on how
the individual channels that en
ergy.”
Bauer’s message to students
was to get involved with their
government, whether campaign
ing or just voting..
Fourth-year computer-engi
neering student Amro Ragaban
said he is taking Marketing 457
to learn some business and com
munication skills that will help
him when he enters the job mar
ket after graduation.
“So far, I’ve learned a lot of the
top qualities of being a salesman
and how to market myself,” he
said. “We have a lot of speakers
who come and tell us about their
mistakes and, hopefully, to pre
vent us from making the same.”
Although Bauer said he has
surpassed any expectations he
ever had in college to be in poli
tics, right now he is interested
only in-serving South Carolina.
“Happiness is the best pa
rameter, and mine is to be hap
py and go to work,” he said. “If I
died today, I’d die happy. I live to
work.”
