BRIEFLY Track teams finish in top five at NCAAs Lashinda Demus led the way with an individual national championship and a pair of school records in the men’s and women’s 4-by-400-meter relays, as the USC women’s track team finished in a second-place tie at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Track Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. The men’s track team land ed in a three-way, tie for fifth place. Both track teams com bined for a total of 21 All Americans at the competition. The women’s team tied for second with Florida at 44 points, as LSU took the title with 62 points. The men fin ished in a three-way tie for fifth place with Tennessee and Villanova. “It was a great finish for us,” USC head coach Curtis Frye said. “We wanted to finish among the top five, and to finish second on the women’s side is a great accomplishment. I am hap py with the results.” Demus won the 400 dash title with a time of 51.79 seconds, her season-best mark. Demetria Washington placed fifth in the event with a time of 52.32. “I was just thankful to get to the finals because of all the tough competitors in the pre liminaries,” Demus said. “I am very thankful to get the win.” Frye said: “Lashinda ran a great race in the 400. She demon strated how big-time athletes do big-time things in big situa tions.” The women’s 4-by-400 relay team set a school-record ol 3228.25, but Texas won with a col legiate record 3:27.66. The team of Tiffany Ross, Miki Barber, Washington and Demus kept it close with the Longhorns, espe cially during the anchor leg of the race. The men’s 4-by-400 relay team finished with a time of 3:05.10, also a school record. Jonathan Fortenberry’s late charge down the final stretch capped the race, allowing the Gamecocks to fin ish third. Fortenberry placed fourth in the men’s 400 with a time of 46.01, while Aleen Bailey placed fifth in the women’s 60 dash with a time of 7.30 and Otukile Lekote placed seventh in the 800 run with a time of 1:48.68. Men’s tennis beats three over break The 14th-ranked USC men’s tennis team improved to 11-1 on the season by defeating the University of Nevada at Las Vegas 6-1 Wednesday in Las Vegas. The Gamecocks won all the doubles matches before tak ing five of the six singles matches. The teams of Carl Wermee/Seth Rose, Geraldo Knorr/Angelo Niculescu and Ben Atkinson/Tom Eklund all recorded wins to pace the Gamecocks to an early 1-0 lead. USC’s singles players made quick work of the opposition; Wermee, Atkinson and Knorr won each of their contests to win the match. Rose also recorded a victory for the Gamecocks at the No. 1 position by a score of 6-3, 7-6. Niculescu, ranked 59th, im proved to 12-0 in dual match play with a win at No. 2, On March 10, the Gamecocks defeated 20th-ranked Arkansas, 4-2, in Columbia. USC recorded doubles wins from Eklund/Marcus Westman and Wermee/Rose, while getting sin gles victories from Niculescu, Atkinson and Wermee. Carolina beat LSU 4-3 on March 8, as Westman, Niculescu, Atkinson and Rose clinched sin gles wins. The pair of Niculescu and Knorr won their doubles match. The Gamecocks’ next home match will be March 26 against Clemson. USC struggles over spring break week The lOth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team picked up its third straight SEC win on Friday as it defeated the 24th ranked Gamecocks 7-0 in Nashville. The Commodores have now defeated the Gamecocks five straight times. The Commodores (12-3,3-2 SEC) won all the doubles match es easily over USC (8-3, 4-1), while in singles, the Gamecocks forced three singles matches to go to three sets. But the Gamecocks could not pull it out in the end. Jodi Kenoyer took the first set at the No. 2 singles 6-2 but loss the remaining two sets 6-2,6-4. Magda Wojdylo lost the first set 7-5 but forced a third set tiebreaker and then lost 10 6. Catherine Brown dropped her tiebreaker 10-3. Kathy Boyanovich, Danielle Wiggins and Justine Walsh were all defeated in straight sets. Georgia Tech also swept the Gamecocks 7-0 on Wednesday in Atlanta. The victory was the fourth straight for the Yellow Jackets. On March 10, the Gamecocks won 6-1 over Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. USC won the doubles point, getting wins from Wojdylo/Boyanovich and Kenoyer/Wiggins. Carolina received singles vic tories from Boyanovich, Wojdylo, Brown, Walsh and Wiggins. USC also played and beat LSU 5-2 on March 8 in Baton Rouge, La. The pair of Kenoyer/Wiggins won the only doubles match for the Gamecocks, beating Jessica Ferguson and Amanda Mang of LSU. Walsh, Boyanovich, Kenoyer, Wojdylo and Wiggins all won their singles matches. Carolina lost 4-3 to Kentucky on Monday. USC will play Tulsa at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center in Columbia. I'— Baseball CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 Arkansas took the series in game two with a 4-1 victory led by Jarrett Gardner’s complete game. Gardner silenced the Gamecock bats with a seven-in ning, one-run, four-hit perfor mance. Campbell pitched five innings and gave up one run on four hits, but Rawl was beaten up for three runs and three hits to take the loss for USC. Arkansas scored three of its runs in the seventh inning on Hode’s sacrifice fly and Nick Pitts’two-run home run. Johnson (1-1) struck out six and allowed one earned run on three hits as the Gamecocks swept NIU. Amber Curtis’ single in the second inning brought in Melissa Sandel and Kristin Hall, while Curtis and Debralee Troesh each scored on fifth-in ning singles. March 16 Game 1: USC 3 - LSU 2 Game 2: LSU 6 - USC 3 Tia Rogers drove in the game-winning run in the 10th inning, and Stacey Johnson pitched the entire game for USC in a 3-2 win over the Tigers in the first game of the doubleheader. Rogers’ single with two outs in the tenth brought in Debralee Troesh with the tiebreaker. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Gamecocks lost 6-3 after getting behind early in the game. Rogers and Quinones both hit home runs to account for USC’s runs. Henkes took the loss for Carolina. Basketball CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 The Gamecocks struggled for ' most of the first half, shooting a poor 26 percent, but used enough defensive pressure against the Bulldogs to go into halftime down only four, 26-22. USC did, however, come out of the locker room with a mis sion in the second half. To open up play, the Gamecocks burst out in a 26-11 run to claim a sol id 48-37 lead with 9:49 left in reg ulation. But USC was unable to take advantage, and scored only one more field goal for the remainder of the game. In overtime, Jarvis Hayes and Steve Thomas were all the offense UGA would need. The two connected for all of Georgia’s 10 points as the Bulldogs were able to hold out for the win. The Gamecocks were led by Warren with 14 points. Fellow senior Tony Kitchings put up 10 points and nabbed 13 re bounds. Howell also put in a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Hayes led the Bulldogs with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
