has noticed safety concerns in
Five Points.
“A matter of fact, we have
customers coming in here talk
ing about safety all the time, es
pecially on weekends. They
can’t walk around because they
fear someone will attack them
or rob them,” he said. “We get
customers looking for locks to
replace.”
Cooper said that he has spo
ken with employees at the
Century 21 building next door
who have had cars broken into
and who have noticed piles of
empty wallets on top of their
building, “where they were
trashed,” he said.
Cooper thinks the Columbia
police have always responded
well to his store’s reports of van
dalism.
“I have a lot of respect for
them, but something’s got to be
done,” he said. “I just want to
know, is there anything they
can do more of?”
Utsey said that any group on
campus can arrange to have a
community safety officer speak
with them about keeping safe
by calling (803) 733-8415.
