Sheik cancels concert at USC
“DAYLIGHT”

Duncan Shiek canceled to
day’s show at the Russell House
as of noon yesterday. Shiek will
instead be shooting a role in'
NBC’s “American Dreams,” a
move his management informed
the school of at last minute.
Shiek has an artistic flair and
25 years of experience in writing
music, and it is unfortunate that
Columbia will miss his live
show.
Years after the success of the
single “Barely Breathing” off his
self-titled debut album, Sheik
has created a portfolio of work
worth listening to on his fourth
release.
At a time when emo is popu
lar and it’s fashionable to sing
about being dumped and having
your heart crushed, Sheik has
written an album full of melodic
tunes that are tinged with a mix
of folk, rock and pop.
General critical opinion has
expressed disappointment with
the production — some of the
songs overuse reverberation;
Sheik sounds better live. But
Sheik’s smooth voice and guitar
playing break through to gener
ate an uplifting mood. This al
bum could launch him back into
the mainstream.
He recently finished a tour
with Ben-Fplds Five, and it’s un
fortunate that Columbia will not
have the pleasure of this man’s
music for a night.
Raised in the Hilton Head
area, Sheik attended Brown
University and majored in semi
otics. Sheik’s interests vary
widely; he has a penchant for
modem classical musicians such
as Steven Reich and female rock
ers such as Tori Amos and
Bjork.
With a girlfriend to inspire
him to write songs such as “On
a High,” Sheik has a lot of good
stuff going on.
It’s sad that he’s not coming.

said the organization was disap
pointed in Sheik’s manage
ment’s flippancy. Many others
will likely be disappointed as
well.

to 9 p.m. It’s closed Mondays and
Sundays. Entrees are $3.25 to $8.50.
