“Freud said kissing is a perver
sion because it’s not, strictly
speaking, necessary,” said Michael
Christian, who believes instead
that kissing is an art.
How do you perfect an art?
“Profile position!” Christian or
dered his performers, six Carolina
Productions volunteers who
brought their love lives to stage.
“Now, close your eyes and cry.”
“When you do, kiss each eye,”
he said.
The audience giggled, but in
awe. Few performers have the
nerve to trot taboos on stage for
all the world to see. Fewer still al
low the audience to zoom in close
to watch six performers play ton
sil hockey.
“I want you to be comfortable,”
he said. “I don’t want you to be
like — I didn’t see liposuction,”
one of the 30 kisses on display last
Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Russell
House Ballroom. “This is your op
portunity. It’s just a little lip ac
tion — it’s subtle, subtle lip ac
tion.”
“Liposuction is where two peo
ple together kiss and suck on the
bottom lip vigorously,” said Jon
Serpas, a second-year English stu
dent. He demonstrated liposuction
with his partner Meghan Sturgis,
a second-year psychology student.
The performers demonstrated
how to detect a flirt and return
one. They showed where pleasure
areas are located — or, barring
that, how to locate someone’s fa
vorite spot while avoiding the
crassness of asking.
“Men? Did you know that a kiss
that is twice as arousing is on her
ears?” he said.
“Profile position! Kiss her ear,”
he ordered, and they obeyed.
Though his bluntness evoked
laugher, it also got the job done ef
ficiently.
If you don’t know where to kiss
someone, he said, “find out with the
sliding kiss.”
“Always observe their reaction”
as your Ups meander along the con
tours of your chosen one,” he said.
“Can you talk when you’re kiss
ing?” he said. “Yeah, if you talk
into their mouth.”
But some relationships are get
ting old and kissing isn’t arous
ing anymore. "Let’s say you’re in
a long-term college romance — al
most three weeks,” he said.
“Girls, rub your body against
him. Oh, how can he resist? Up.
And down.”
He bagged Justin Kuhns and
Jon Serpas in a pair of red tongue
suits and put on goggles to ex
plore the dynamics of French
kissing.
To French kiss, if you’re won
dering, one shouldn’t start by
shoving one’s tongue completely
into another’s mouth. Apparently,
jousting is a common mistake.
Rather, partners should start with
the tips of their tongues and move
inward, resulting in a slow, wet,
sensual massage.
Christian taught English at
Boston University before writing
his best seller, “The Art of Kissing.”
He’s taken the book on an epic tour
of more than 400 stops, all the while
trying to make life more interest
ing.
“There’s an eternity before us
and after us,” Christian said. “You
have to live intensely.” Those who
might be too scared to try his
techniques might miss out on
some of the adventures of life.
Adventures, for instance, like
Christian’s favorite, the American
kiss. “It’s intimate, and yet people
can see you. It’s supremely ro
mantic,” he said.
The American kiss requires a
car and some dangerous passion.
The girl straddles the guy in the
driver’s seat — while he’s driving.
