ished with 18 points on the night,
from 7-of-ll shooting, including a
pair of 3-pointers.
Two of Carolina’s other
starters, Chris Warren and
Kerbrell Brown finished with dou
ble-digits point tallies. Warren had
11 points and three steals. Brown,
scored 15 points, including a trio
of 3-pointers.
Sophomore Carlos Powell gave
USC the big sixth-man effort that
the team needed, with 16 points
and six rebounds off the bench.
With a productive front court
of Powell, Brown, Tony Kitchings
and Rolando Howell, the
Gamecocks handily out-rebound
ed the Commodores 33-22.
Carolina also had its best shoot
ing day in a long time, making 59.6
percent of its shots, including 63.6
percent from behind the arc.
“This is a good win for us,”
Odom said. “We got some good
layups off the press, we didn’t give
up many easy baskets, and we did
a good job rebounding.”
The Gamecocks limited
Vanderbilt star Matt Freije to only
13 points. But Brian Thornton,
Vandy’s center, picked up the slack
with a game-high 22 points.
Stallings, though, had a feeling that 1
a night like this would be coming.
“I felt South Carolina would
have a breakout game against
someone. We gave them every
chance tonight,” Stallings said.
“They were shooting something
like 25 percent (from the field)
coming into the game, but you had
the feeling they would shoot well
against someone.”
Stallings said he thinks his
team could be packing it up for the
season.
“Some teams, when they get to
a point like this in a season, fold,”
he said. “And some teams that
reach this point move upward. I
think our team is choosing the for
mer.”
Odom can only hope that his
Gamecocks are opting for the lat
ter.

short of the victory.
Charleston Southern scored
twice in the first inning, as
USC’s starting pitching had an
other shaky outing. Matt
Campbell lasted only 3 1/3 in
nings, giving up five runs, in
cluding four earned rims.
USC relievers Cliff Donald
and Rico Bravo kept the Bucs in

couldn’t and suffered the loss.
CSU’s Jordan Haar knocked
in the game-winning run with a
single, while Scotty Thacker
brought in two insurance runs
with a single of his own.
With two outs and the bases
loaded in the bottom of the ninth,
Carolina’s Demetric Smith
struck out to end the game.
Sunday; USC 11 - CSU 2
The Gamecocks finally got the
bats going and received stingy
pitching in the final game of the
series, dominating Charleston
Southern 11-2. USC was led by
Bryan Triplett’s 3-for-4 outing
with four RBIs.
David Marchbanks (1-0) kept
the Buccaneer batters in check
during his 71/3 innings, when
he gave up two earned runs on
five hits and four strikeouts.
Carolina’s offense got started
in the second inning when
Powell scored off a Gardiner sin
gle. The big inning came in the
sixth, when Triplett hit a bases
loaded triple that scored
Gardiner, Melillo and Jon
Coutlangus to make it a 7-0 game.
CSU scored its only two runs
with a Brian Sole two-run homer
off Marchbanks in the seventh.
USC scored four runs in the
eighth inning, highlighted by
Michael Campbell’s solo homer
in his first career at bat and
Harris’ two-run triple.
“You got to give Charleston
Southern a lot of credit, and they
can pitch,” Tanner said.
“Hopefully, this will be a good
weekend for us to build on.”
