The trailers hint this could be the last voyage for the cast of “The Next Generation.” “The Lord of the Rings” series will continue with “The Two Towers,” opening Dec. 18. All three of the series’s films cost a total of $300 million, which was recouped from the first film’s earnings. That means the money earned from “Towers” and “Return of the King” is just gravy. Denzel Washington has his di rectorial debut with “Antwone Fisher,” which opens Dec. 20. Also on the 20th is the romantic comedy “Two Weeks Notice,” starring Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant. Christmas Day is one of the biggest days of the year for movie theaters. This year is no different. Jack Nicholson is already win ning rave reviews for his perfor mance in “About Schmidt,” about a man in his 60s who realizes he has wasted his life. Leonardo DiCaprio has two films opening Christmas Day: “Catch Me if You Can” co-starring Tom Hanks and directed by Steven Spielberg, and the highly anticipated “Gangs of New York.” There has been much controver sy surrounding “Gangs,” but the Martin Scorsese film is now ready for release. Another Hollywood Christmas present will be Edward Norton starring in Spike Lee’s “The 25th Hour,” about a man spending his last night before he goes to prison for seven years. Rounding out the holiday season will be the film version of the mu sical “Chicago” on Dec. 27. It stars Catherine Zeta Jones, Renee Zellwegger and Richard Gere, and the trailers look outstanding. One only wonders whether these films will live up to the hype. Act I: utilizing rhe latest in aero-suit, stealth-shoe, and style-projection technology, the intrepid heroine successfully impersonates o princess at the grand ball to rescue the season.
