And most importantly, the stu dent seats on the sideline were lowered so that students can Stand without blocking the view of those behind them. “There’s a tremendous balancing act between taking care of long-suffering fans and our present student body,” Odom said. “They’re both equally important. I think a real effort was made to accommodate them both.” Some other schools with new arenas, such as Maryland, have given all their courtside seats to students. But Odom wants USC students to know that they weren’t treated unfairly. “Before passing any judgment early and saying, ‘Hey, we’ve been offended’ or ‘We haven’t been taken care of like some other student body has,’ it certainly does not speak to whether this university appreci ates the students as much as any other school,” he said. “Because I guarantee you, we do.” Odom said the seating chart isn’t nec essarily set in stone for years to come. “The plan there now is the plan that seems to be the best,” he said. “But I’ll go out on a limb and say it won’t be the final plan. It will be tweaked from year to year to make it better for whomever.” Odom has expressed his desire in the past for a more-involved student body. He wants the atmosphere of the Carolina Center to be intimidating to opponents. But he said it’s the fan, not the seating arrangement, that’s responsible for creat ing that atmosphere. Students shouldn’t get in an uproar about it,” Odom said about the student sec tion. “Let’s come to the games. Let’s see what it’s about. And then be hurt. “I want to see 4,000 students there. And then, I think people would be more will ing to listen to, ‘Hey, we’re not getting what we deserve here.’ ” Essentially, the head coach issued a challenge to the students to fill up the space that they have now. “Saying that we don’t have the seats „ that we deserve, and then showing up with only 1,000 students ... it kind of rings home,” he said. “So let’s get 4,000 and go from there.” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecocksports@hotmail. com I : m MON...
