Penn is the team’s marquee player. The 6
footer from Conyers, Ga., who led Carolina
last season in scoring, rebounding and
steals, was named All-SEC.
“It certainly is nice to have Jocelyn, our
top scorer and rebounder, back for anoth
er season,” Walvius said. “Jocelyn worked
hard over the summer to improve her
perimeter game and has desires of playing
in the WNBA next summer.”
waivius is looking to Penn and junior
guard Kelly Morrone for leadership.
“If I could point to one reason that we
had success, it was the maturity of our
leadership in those two individuals,”
Waivius said about last season.
Morrone will also be asked to provide
outside scoring — she hit eight of nine 3
pointers against Duke earlier in the season
— and depth at point guard behind Ciocan.
Ciocan, a native of Bucharest, Romania,
had a breakthrough season last year, fin
ishing second in the SEC in assists (6.2).
“We are experienced at point guard,”
Waivius said. “And for any team to be
good, you have to have great communica
tion. You have to have an experienced
point guard.”
Ujhelyi, known for her defensive tough
ness inside, has impressed Walvius lately
for other reasons.
“Petra looks very good offensively,”
Walvius said. “You’ll see her doing more
scoring this year.”
Despite all the talent returning, both in
side and outside, Walvius insists that her
new recruits — forward Kasia Roszak and
guards Koretha Johnson and Sarah .
Burgess — are critical to the team’s suc
cess.
“This year, our success will be based
upon how quickly our newcomers devel
op and how early they can impact our
team,” she said.
The Gamecocks will open their new sea
son Friday against Clemson. The game
will be the first-ever sporting event at the
Carolina Center.
Walvius hopes it will be the start of an
other great year.
“Last season was one of those memo
rable, exciting years that you build on,”
she said. “It was a year of many firsts for
our basketball team, and we’ll use those
experiences to shoot for more this year. ”
