ready to contribute to the inside game.
Odom knows that pounding the ball into
the post is the team’s strongpoint. “If we
can avoid injuries, I believe that the qual
ity of our post men can be as good as any
group in the league,” he said.
The real question mark for this season
is the backcourt. Carolina will face this
season without starting guards Aaron
Lucas and Jamel Bradley, who both grad
uated. Expect USC to rely on a strong se
nior year from Chuck Eidson.
Eidson finished last year with 8.8 points,
3.5 assists and an SEC-leading 2.5 steals
per game. Odom hopes that Eidson will
play the wing and that junior Michael
Boynton and freshman Jarod Gerald can
lead at the point.
Sophomore Carlos Powell and senior
Chris Warren look to improve this season
and give the Gamecocks the boost they
provided last year at the wing position.
USC will face another tough SEC sched
ule and play host to rival Clemson on Feb.'
12. Carolina opens the season Sunday in
the Carolina Center against East
Tennessee State.

“I hope that we have instilled the impor

affect basketball, such as weightlifting, fun
damentals and the value of team play,”
Odom said. “There were two things when I
came in here that he wasn’t too keen about:
strength conditioning/weightlifting and
academics.
“It wasn’t that he was a bad student; he
tolerated academics so he could play bas
ketball. Now I think that has been re
versed. He has developed a passion for aca
demics and says, ‘Oh, by the way, I also
play basketball.’ He has changed, and I
hope we have had an effect on that.”
Learning is a two-way street, after lis
tening to Odom.
“In my mind, he’s reaffirmed that if you
believe in a player, in his skills, in his val
ues, and you stick with him... it will play
