A friend of my parents’ always says, “Col lege is just high school with ashtrays.” But after this past month I’ve been in college. I’m compelled to disagree. Forget the furnishings—even my basic lan guage has changed since I’ve been in college. You don’t have teachers anymore; you have professors — unless you have TAs. And in stead of going to school, you go to class — theoretically. Places such as the GMP and Blatt aren’t spots to avoid, despite how they sound. Also, the Greek people in college tend to look a lot different from the Greek people you knew in high school. If someone asks whether you smoked last night, chances are, they’re not wondering whether you put those aforementioned ash trays to use. Those, of course, are only trivialities. On a more serious note, college life is refreshing. Though we miss the laundry service and home-cooked meals, the newfound freedom from home is nice. And when we do happen to see the folks, they seem more loving after they’ve had time to forget our sloth and use lessness around the house (i.e., they give us money). Checking in with high school friends, too, is different after we’ve all spent time at sepa rate colleges. Each of us has grown in our ■ own direction from the same roots. A Ralph Waldo Emerson passage I found in my En glish 285 textbook seems to summarize the feeling best: “So shall we come to look at the world with new eyes. It shall answer the end less inquiry of the intellect, What is truth? And of the affections — What is good?... Na ture is not fixed but fluid. Spirit alters, moulds, makes it." But what I notice more is the scribble in the margin of the yellowed page: “Life is changing.” BYRD, SEE PAGE 5 1 .
