CD REVIEW
Coldplay matures on new CD
“A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE
HEAD”
Coldplay

BY BROOK BRISTOW
THE GAMECOCK
It was one of those musical mo
ments. Even now, you can still re
member how you felt. The emo
tional melodic symphony went,
“I never meant to cause you trou
ble; oh, I never meant to do you
wrong.”
That was “Trouble” by
Coldplay, and if you remember
being there singing along, then
you’d better be ready for what
lead singer Chris Martin and
Coldplay are bringing you
next.
“Parachutes,” releasedin 2000,
was a masterpiece that took the
band a lifetime to achieve. The fol
low-up to the monster debut is “A
Rush of Blood to the Head,” which
took the band a little less than a
year to complete. It is a journey
through 11 tracks that goes from a
cathartic beginning in “Politik,” a
song about free trade and the
hushed tones of Sept. 11, to the fi
nal track, the quiet melody
“Amsterdam.”
While Coldplay still demon
strates the melodic and harmonic
brilliance of “Parachutes,” there
is a renewed spirit in “A Rush of
Blood to the Head” that shows the
band’s maturity, as well as devel
opment that will dispel criticism
the band is a wannabe Radiohead
and a group of young bedwetters.
From the outset of “A Rush of
Blood to the Head,” Coldplay es
tablishes itself with soaring vocals
and flawless chiming guitars.
“Politik” opens the album with a
two-chord clang and a call to arms
that immediately draws listeners
in.
“In My Place,” the first ra
dio single, is next and offers
an uplifting soulfulness,
though the song is about lone
liness. With the lyrics “Please,
please, please, come back and
sing to me,” Coldplay travels
back into the vein of
“Parachutes,” but shows the
sonic maturity it has gained
since that album.
“God Put a Smile on your
Face” is a marvelous track that
offers driving guitars accom
panied by an edginess Coldplay

Boat to rock Labor Day
BY AUBREY FOGLE
THE GAMECOCK
What do you get when you
combine platinum-selling rock
bands, 1,000 fans and a big
cruise ship?
You get the Rock Boat, a new
type of concert experience go
ing on Labor Day weekend.
The event allows partici
pants to spend four days on
board a cruise ship, with stops
at Tampa and Key West, Fla.,
and the Bahamas, while artists
such as Sister Hazel and Edwin
McCain serenade the vacation
ers throughout the trip.
Headlining the event are
Sister Hazel, a rock band from
Gainesville, Fla., best known
for its 1998 mega-hit “All For
You” off its debut album,
“Somewhere More Familiar,”
and Edwin McCain, a recent
popular artist.
Other acts on the Rock Boat
include Dexter Freebish, a rock
band that just finished playing
for U.S. troops overseas;
Cowboy Mouth, an experimen
tal rock band featuring all four
members as lead singers and
songwriters; the Pat McGee
Band, a contemporary grass
roots band featuring vocal har
monies and energized acoustic
rock; and Chuck Carrier, gui
tarist and vocalist from the
band Marathon, who has had
some solo success as well.
The bands will stay on the
same boat the whole four days,
playing surprise jam sessions
and mingling with each other on
stage throughout the weekend.
The Rock Boat made its de
but last year, when 400 fans
bought cabins, the number of
tickets sold this year has more
than doubled to 1000.
Fans say the Rock Boat has
been so successful because of
the opportunity it gives music
lovers from all over the country
to meet each other and rock out
for a whole weekend.
Jennifer Woodall, a Sister
Hazel fan from Kansas City,
Mo., who is on her second Rock
Boat trip, said: “The Rock Boat
cruise of 2001 gave me the op
portunity to meet (fellow fans)
who I had been talking to online
for close to a year. I went to
places I had never been, did
things I had never done. I am
definitely keeping Labor Day

weekend open for the next 50
years.”
The event is the brainchild of
Sixthman, an Atlanta artist
management firm, and Wiley
Music, an Atlanta music pro
motion company. The two com
panies have chartered Carnival
Cruise Line’s “Sensation,”
which offers dining, spa treat
ments and casinos. The event’s
sponsors are Pepsi and
Aquafina.
According to spokeswoman
Britney Gray, all the parties re
sponsible are ready to make
this happen again next year,
and maybe the next 10 years.
