; benefit is going to be the recognition
: that the Greek community will get,"
Reuter said. “The Greek Village will
do a lot for the broad Greek com
munity” Reuter continued, “ I think
it will increase the number of peo
ple interested in being members of
Greek organizations on this cam
pus."
Although Zeta Tau Alpha is the
only sorority currently on one of
the lots, the construction planned
for the next year will even out the
male-female ratio. "Of the four that
are opening this fall, there are three
fraternities and one sorority,”
Reuter said. "But, overall, when you
look at the 15 lots that have been as
signed, there are going to be eight
sororities and seven fraternities, so
it’s going to be very nicely bal
anced."
Zeta Tau Alpha was the first
sorority to sign up for a location in
the Greek Village last fall. President
Jessica Hood said that ZTA mem
bers were glad to be a part of the
new community. "The members of
Zeta Tau Alpha are glad that we are
one of the groups that is able to
build a house and to be in the Greek
village," Hood said. "Being mixed in
with other organizations builds a
sense of Greek unity."
Although it will be another year
before the village is complete, the
extra living spaces will help signifi
cantly with the recent housing
shortage. "The houses are going to
sleep anywhere from 28-36 mem
bers," Reuter said. "We're looking at
having about 140 people in the fall,
and when it's done and all the hous
es are full, we're looking to have
about 500 students living there.”

Bombers, USC talk ball
BY ERIC STIDHAM
THE GAMECOCK
The Capital City Bombers base
ball team, an affiliate team of the
New York Mets, would like to have
a new state-of-the-art facility to keep
their partnership with the Mets.
The Gamecocks, who have reached
the finals in the College World
Series, would like to be rewarded for
their spectacular play.
Frank Burke, principle owner of
the Bombers, recently met with
USC Athletics Director Mike McGee
to talk about a joint stadium. Burke
also owns the Chattanooga
Lookouts and the Portland (Maine)
Seadogs.
Burke, interested in building a
new stadium in the downtown area,
i raised funds for a $10 million stadi
um in Chattanooga but doesn't fore
see the same occurring here in
Columbia.
The Mets threatened to end its 20
year affiliation with the Bombers if
the field conditions and drainage
system weren't improved.
Improvements have been major con
cerns for the Bombers, and now the
team and its owners are looking into
the possibility of joining with USC.
USC Senior Associate Athletic
Director John Moore stated "there
was a preliminary meeting between
the athletic department and the new
ownership of the Capital City
Bombers,” and in this first-time
meeting both parties discussed "in
vestigating the possibility."
Moore also said that, so far, there
have been no meetings scheduled,
but he was sure there will be more
later in the year. When asked if
there was a timetable for these
events, Moore replied, "No, it's very
premature to say that planning has
begun outside of the fact that we are
exploring the possibility.”
With the Gamecocks baseball
team reaching the College World
Series, and all USC sports having
successful seasons, the need for ad
equate facilities is apparent to sus
tain a continued rise in athletic suc
cess. To meet the challenge Moore
reassured, "They will continue to
investigate the possibility."
