American flag exploitation needs to stop
ELIZABETH YOSTE
DAILY MISSISSIPPI
Old Glory being pimped
out so the greedy can
fatten their wallets.
(UWIRE) OXFORD, Miss. - As I
was bebopping around Oxford the
other morning shopping for
birthday gifts, I strolled into
Chaney's Pharmacy to find
something cute.
As I waited at the checkout, I
looked around the counter at the
little tidbits people don't need, but
buy on impulse.
"Oh, cute little Kleenexes," I
thought to myself. Leopard print,
sports themes, polka dots... the
American flag.
I'm as patriotic as the next
person, but I refuse to buy Kleenex
made to represent an American
flag. Come on, people. You blow
your nose on these!
Ever since Sept. 11, a wave of
patriotism has swept the nation.
With it came commercialism that's
worse than Christmas. It seems
that wherever you turn there is
someone capitalizing on
Americans' surge of nationalism.
I’m sorry, but I'm not going to do
my banking at Bank XXX because
they bought a billboard on the
highway to display an American
flag... and then put their logo at
the bottom just so you know the
people at that bank love America.
With the passing of Flag Day on
June 14,1 hoped that the proper
etiquette used when handling the
flag and its symbolic use was
brought to the attention of not
only the public, but also
corporations hoping to make a
quick buck by "being patriotic.”
For the sake of being official:
U.S. Flag Code specifically states
the flag should never be used as
wearing apparel, bedding or
drapery. The flag should not be
used for advertising purposes.
And, as stated in Title 4 of the
U.S. Code Chapter 1, Sect. 8: "It
should not be embroidered on
such articles as cushions or
handkerchiefs and the like,
printed or otherwise impressed on
paper napkins or boxes or
anything that is designed for
temporary use and discard."
This includes blowing your snot
on it and throwing it in a
receptacle. Unfortunately, these
violations and many others
happen every year around July 4
and during the Olympics, but it
just seems to have gone to obscene
extremes these past 10 months. I
see red, white and blue
everywhere.
About a month after the Sept. 11
attacks, I was strolling along the
beach in Tampa, Fla. Most beaches
are known for tacky souvenir
shops and this beach was no
different. Among the fake
seashells, unabsorbent towels and
cheap bikinis, were tacky T-shirts
with "I love NY," the World Trade
Center towers, the American flag
or Osama bin Laden with a bull's
eye across his face emblazoned on
the front.
A sign above it reassured me
that if I bought one of these lovely
T-shirts, a portion of the proceeds
would be donated to the Sept. 11
fund. I seriously doubt that a large
percentage of money that was to
be donated actually made it into
the hands of the right people.
If you feel patriotic, wear the
colors, join the Army or just
display the flag properly If you
love your country, it shows in your
heart and what you do for other
Americans, and not necessarily
what you do to show other people
you're American.
IN YOUR OPINION
USC/Virginia plate
plan needs sponsors
Have you seen students from
South Carolina with USC license
plates on their cars? Have you
ever tried to get license plates
with the USC logo? If you are
from Virginia and have answered
yes to this question, you're in
luck.
Right now there is a movement
to get USC license plates for vehi
cles registered in the state of
Virginia. Virginia law requires
350 vehicles to be sponsored in or
der to allow an alumni associa
tion the right to print specialized
license plates.
If you would like Virginia li
cense plates with the USC logo,
please contact Andrew Sloane at

CLASS OF 2001
Palestinians are not
“Freedom Fighters”
The Palestinians want a state,
not to secure their freedom, but
to perpetuate the dictatorial reign
of Arafat's Palestinian Authority.
Arafat's "police" brutally expro
priate property and silence op
posing viewpoints by shutting
down radio and TV stations. They
systematically arrest, torture and
murder peaceful dissenters. To
call the militant Palestinians
"freedom fighters" - when they
support the subjugation of their
own people, when they deliber- [
ately murder children in the '
streets or gleefully praise such de
pravity - is a mind-numbing per
version.
A Palestinian state headed
by Arafat would be a launching
pad and a training ground for ter
rorist organizations targeting, not
only Israel, but the United States.
Forcing Israelis to accept a
Palestinian state under
Arafat is like forcing
Americans to accept a state the
size of Mexico, 12 miles from New
York City, ruled by Osama bin
Laden. As long as the Palestinians
sanction aggression, they should
not be permitted their own state.
