Patel not serving
student interests
With last week's announcement of a 17 percent jump
in tuition came a galling quote from Student Government
President Ankit Patel.
On Friday, The State newspaper quoted Patel, in
reference to the large increase, saying "I don't think it'll be
a great burden."
We'd like to know then, how he defines "great burden."
A17 percent increase is a lot. It might not be that big a deal
to some, but at last check, "some" are outnumbered on this
campus.
It's not easy for many families to send a son or
daughter to a college. It's harder still to put yourself
through college. College is a sacrifice that lasts longer
than the years needed to earn a degree. What more must
be sacrificed to the tuition gods?
We expect better than this from our lone
representative on the board of trustees. They might not
listen to you, but it's disheartening to see you repeating
the company line. You are supposed to represent our best
interests to them, not serve as their lackey.

Rapp fills blank space.
There are those nights when
you stare at lots of blank space on
your section's layout with precious
few options. There are those
nights, when after days worth of
trying, you can't reach the colum
nists you want to grace your sec
tion for the week.
i ms, inenas, is one oi tnose
nights. For nights like these, there
is Tylenol, Diet Pepsi, unacadem
ic language, and Krispy Kreme.
But those don't fill space. So,
with apologies to Kevin Costner's
Crash Davis in "Bull Durham," I
present my own version of his oft
imitated "I believe" speech. Do en
joy.
♦ I believe that bowling, putt
putt, a cigar with “The Boys,” or
throwing a baseball are good for
whatever ails you.
♦ I believe that church is, too.
♦ I believe trains know exactly
when you’re running late.
♦ I believe the Chicken Curse
is dead.
♦ I believe baseball is God's gift
to the summer.
♦ I believe the Darryl Kiles of
the sports world should get more
press than the Barry Bondses.
♦ I believe the Steelers will win
the Super Bowl next January
♦ I believe Philly is worthless,
except for their cheesesteak sand
wiches and cream cheese for
bagels.
♦ I believe Disney World is the
place to go when you win a cham
pionship ... in anything.
♦ i Deiieve Fiuto is Detter than
Scooby-Doo.
♦ I believe Snow White is the
prettiest Disney princess.
♦ I believe I'm tired of WNOK
playing the same songs every hour,
on the hour.
♦ I believe all of Creed's songs
sound the same.
♦ I believe in Metallica.
♦I believe in Jessica Simpson
over Britney Spears.
♦I believe compassionate con
servatism is hooey.
♦ I believe every good ol' boy
should get booted out of office.
♦ I believe airlines should
charge people for two seats if they
need two.
♦ I believe that if you're going
to do something, it's worth doing
well.
♦ I believe in little things and
attention to detail.
♦ I believe in cute, feminine -
women with longish dark hair in
which I can get lost, eyes into
which I can stare forever, fair skin,
and a smile that lights up the East
Coast.
♦ I believe in romantic, slow-de
veloping relationships.
♦ I also believe I ask for too
much.
♦ I believe Damon's is the place
for ribs. Or Harpers.
♦ I believe in USC, despite its
shortcomings. I believe that after
December, I'll tell anyone who will
listen that yes indeed, I am a
Gamecock!
♦I believe copy editors and page
designers are the most important,
yet underrated, members of our
staff.
♦ I believe I’ve filled up the space
I needed to fill.
