CNN Corespondent
Named USC’s New
Journalism Dean
BYEDRIN WILLIAMS
THE GAMECOCK
USC's newest college has
found a new president. The'
College of Mass
Communications and
Information studies was cre
ated when trustees voted last
spring to combine the
College of Journalism and
Mass Communications and
the College of Library and
Information Science. There
was concern over who would
lead the college once Fred
Roper, who has served as
dean of Library and
Information. Sciences since
1986, announced plans to re
tire in 2003. The College of
Journalism and Mass
Communications had an in
terim dean in place.
The new dean came to
them in the form of an
award-winning journalist.
Charles Bierbauer served as
a CNN’s head Washington
correspondent for 20 years
and has been chosen to lead
the new college.
"Our search for a dean
was an interesting one,"
commented Dr. Henry Price,
current interim dean.
"In any search some can
didates stand out more than
others. As people met him
they realize his obvious in
telligence and strong back
ground in news. He is very
accomplished and skilled
which are all important at
tributes.”
Bierbauer has a resume
that includes extensive do
mestic and foreign dealings.
Bierbauer began his career
almost 40 years ago as a ra
dio reporter in Allentown,
PA in 1963. From 1981-2001,
he worked in Washington,
covering the Supreme Court,
both the Bush
and Reagan ad
ministrations, .
and the presi
dential cam
paigns.In 1997,
he won an
Emmy for his CNN coverage
of the Olympic Park bomb
ing. His most recent work
was a Discovery Channel
documentary on the World
Trade Center and Pentagon
attacks.
Even though his resume
does not include experience
as an educator, Dr. Price feels
it isn't a factor.
"He will do fine; there are
many people he can draw
knowledge from. He is a very
intelligent man and a quick
learner."
Bierbauer is a graduate of
Penn State University, where
he received a bachelor's de
gree in Russian and journal
ism. He later received a mas
ter's Degree in journalism.
He is married to Susanne
Schaffer, a correspondent
for The Associated Press.
The couple has four chil
dren.
Bierbauer was in
Columbia this week meeting
with faculty and staff and
Dr. Sorensen.
"His plans and focus are
yet to come. After he meets
with Dr. Sorensen and things,
lock into place he will prob
ably have a direction he
wants to go by week's end,"
said Price.
Bierbauer will begin work
in July. With the merger, he
will oversee a college that in
cludes several nationally
ranked programs, including
Advertising and Public
Relations, Library Science,
and School Library Media.
