of the ladies. They played with so
much heart and fought until the
final putt dropped. Our goal was
to be in contention coming into
the final round because we have
played so well all spring on the last
day.”
The Lady Gamecocks picked
the right time to put together their
best tournament in school histo
ry. Carolina’s three-day total
didn’t just crush the school record
for team tournament score (previ
ously an 884 at the 2000 Lady
Paladin Invitational); it was three
strokes better than the SEC
Championships record of 864 set
by Georgia in 1988.
Individually, Carolina’s per
formance across the board was
key.
Senior Reetta Laakkonen easily
posted her best career rounds, as
she posted career-low rounds on
Saturday and Sunday.
Carolina shot its highest score
of the tournament on Sunday, but
it played a solid back nine to re
capture the lead and hold on. USC
stood at five-over par after the first
nine holes and fell three strokes
back of No. 9 Tennessee, but
Tennessee cooled down and the
Lady Gamecocks played the back
nine collectively at three-under to
win the title.
McPherson got a scare from
Cutler, who finished before
McPherson on Sunday and was in
the clubhouse with a five-under 211.
Tied with Cutler entering the fi
nal six holes, McPherson carded
three birdies down the stretch and
earned the win with a three-day 209.
The 209 is the second-best score
in SEC Tournament history, two
strokes back of McPherson’s own
207 in last year’s tournament.
Carolina now awaits word in
early May as to where it will head
in next month’s NCAA Regional
Championships.

Kim Evans crossed home in
the sixth inning for USC, cutting
the lead in half, but it was too lit

Stacey Johnson (10-6) allowed
two unearned runs on four hits
for USC. Amanda Moore (10-12)
earned the win for Florida.
Carolina senior Adrianna
Baggetta went 2-for-3 with a pair
of singles, but for the most part,
USC’s offense was missing. In
the final three innings, runners
were left in scoring position.
Game 3: USC 1, Honda 0
