ARIES: Trouble understanding
somebody’s point of view?
Spend more time listening.
TAURUS: You may have

GEMINI: All work makes Jack

CANCER: You should be feeling

help of donations from local
businesses, will be giving
prizes to students who pick the
most winners correctly out of
the different categories.
“We’re going to have ballots
for each person to fill out, so
that they can vote for who they
think is going to win... we’re
going to have prizes for the
people who get the most
correct, and we’re also having
door prizes. The prizes are
donations from local businesses
and include dinners, gift
certificates and merchandise,”
said Brandon Szmidt, CP’s
traditional events
Commissioner.
USC’s Oscar Party tradition
started in 1994, but .until this
year, the last time CP arranged
it was in 1999. “We’ve had as
many as 32 businesses
contribute prizes, including
CDs, a dinner for two at Diane’s
on Divine, etc,” Szmidt said.
“This year we’ve contacted 52
different businesses to try to get
more prizes.”
The event starts at 7 p.m.
with the broadcast of the red
carpet showcase. “The red
carpet showcase is where the
press interviews celebrities as
they arrive,” Szmidt said.
“We’ll be showing that while
everyone is filling out the
ballots. At 8 o’clock, the actual
awards start.”
“We’re going to have tables
and chairs, and the ballroom
will be decorated like an upscale
event—like the Academy
Awards are on TV,” Szmidt said.
CP invites students to munch
on free snacks and beverages as
the Oscars are broadcast on a
bigscreen television, but CP
prefers students don’t wear
evening attire. “It’s going to be
casual... we don’t want anyone
to dress up unless they really
want to,” Szmidt said.
Drama queens and kings,
don’t forget those speeches. But
leave the evening gowns at
home.

Elf Power going mainstream
“CREATURES”
Elf Power
BY MIKE LUKE
THE GAMECOCK
Just like REM did almost two
decades ago, Athens, Ga. based
Elf Power is breaking through in
the college music scene. It’s
taken a while, but Elf Power’s
sixth album, “Creatures”, is
finally getting mainstream
attention.
The band has been touring
Europe and are now back in the
States.
Elf Power’s style lies
somewhere between Weezer and
Bob Dylan. If that’s too broad,
you can call them “Power
Wallflowers. ” Their lyrics are
deeply poetic, with spacious
melodies and many acoustic
based songs. Elf Power is
definitely not the ghastly “I’m
depressed, you’re depressed, so I
might as well make money off of
our depression” type of music
that is unfortunately popular
right now. It’s not exactly the
type of band you’ll bring to listen
to on a jog either. Its sound on
“Creatures” is very passive. Put
the CD on, sing along and engage
yourself in other things. The
music doesn’t require active
u
listening, but it won’t put you to
sleep either. *
Creatures is a widely diverse
album. The vocal melody is the
star of most of the songs, and it’s
also the savior of some of the
more lackluster songs. The first
song, “Let the Serpent Sleep,” is
fittingly the best track on the
album. It’s also the best
representation of the band’s
sound. “Let the Serpent Sleep,”
along with “ Visions of the Sea”
and “The Creature Part H” are
songs that make Elf Power
comparable to the giants of
mainstream folk rock music.
“Everlasting Scream,” “Palace of
the Lambs” and “The Haze”
represent the more pop-punk
style of Elf Power. As with the
other songs;0 it’s not the complex
song structure that makes them
good, it’s the melody.
“The Creature,” “Things That
Should Not Be” and “Three
Steps” possibly foreshadow the
popularity that may be coming
to Elf Power. The songs are very
similar to the rock style of The
Strokes, who is currently
residing high on the Billboard
charts. Laura Carter, the
keyboardist, plays an accordion
on the songs “The Modern
Mind,” “Unseen Hand” and
“Three Seeds,” making the band
fit into the folk rock niche even
better.
For the most part though,
guitarist Adrian Finch,
drummer Aaron Wegelin,
bassist/singer Andrew Rieger
and Laura Carter have
developed a song writing
technique that yields very
similar songs from a variety of
styles.
What’s the best thing about
“Creatures”? It’s not bogged
down with love songs! Although
some lyrics may be interpreted
to be about love, on the surface,
most of the songs are not. Part of
what adds to the music is poetry
is what the songs actually do
represent instead of love. “The
Haze” may be the only song on
the album clearly about love but,
overall, their songs are happier
and much more thought
provoking than most popular
music.
Elf Power is touring hard and
could be huge with the corporate
promoting power of a
mainstream label. The group
will be at New Brooklyn Tavern
on Saturday night with My
Mourning Jacket and Swearing
at Motorists.
