Curtis named SEC
Player of the Week
The SEC named USC sopho
more shortstop Amber Curtis
this week’s softball Player of
the Week. Curtis led the Lady
Gamecocks to a 4-1 record last
week by going 9-for-16 (.562)
with a home run, three doubles
and four walks. By scoring sev
en and driving in four, Curtis
accounted for 11 USC runs this
past week.
In the three-game series
against Mississippi State over
the weekend, the Tucson, Ariz.
native went 5-for-ll (.455) with
four runs, three RBIs and two
doubles.
Curtis is hitting .287 on the
year, and she has started all 29
games for USC.
She also leads USC with five
home runs this year and is sec
ond on the team in on-base per
centage (.619).
USC divers qualify
for championships
USC divers competed at the
NCAA Zones Competition last
weekend, with four divers earn
ing a chance to compete at the
NCAA Championships.
Senior Brandon Hulko,
sophomore Holly Hodges and
freshmen Allison Brennan and
Tracey Richardson will com
pete in the NCAA
Championships in the next two
weeks.
“I’m very excited about what
happened this weekend with
our divers,” USC head diving
coach Todd Sherritt said. “We
had a lot of compliments for our
team, especially with our fresh
men divers competing as well
as they did. In terms of fresh
men making the NCAA
Championships, it is very hard
to make it, but we did a great
job.”
Competing on the three-me
ter springboard, Hulko placed
fourth at the Zones
Competition with a score of
540.85.
On the women’s side, Hodges
followed up her success at the
SEC Championships with a

And in case you wanted more
ammo against Kramer, he de
vised that brilliant BCS scoring
system. That’s right, the same
one that sent Florida State to the
national championship last year
over a team (Miami) that had the
same record and a victory over
the Seminoles.
The bottom line: Kramer’s ab

of most of the SEC’s offensive sta
tistical categories.
Yaron Peters will continue his
breakout senior season. He leads
USC in hitting (.432), home runs
(9), and RBIs (36). Steve Thomas
and Garris Gonce keep on pound
ing the ball as well, while senior
Trey Dyson has been coming
along the last few weeks.
“He has worked extremely
hard,” Tanner said of Thomas.
“He’s worked for this opportuni
ty, and he’s making the best of it.
He’s doing a super job for us.”
Tanner said Dyson “was being
too patient at the plate, and we’ve
encouraged him to go at it.”
Tanner has relied on a strong
core of starting pitching, but it is
backed up by an even better
bullpen.
Tony Adler, Chris Hernandez,
Aaron Rawl, Steven Bondurant

Men’s golf finishes
13th in invitational
The USC men’s golf team
shot a three-round score of 878
to finish 13th at the Conrad
Rehling Invitational in
Tuscaloosa, Ala this past week
end. Minnesota led each round
of competition and finished on
top of the leaderboard with a
score of 847.
USC’s Brent Delahoussaye
struggled in the second round af
ter firing a 68 in the first round.
On Sunday, however, he fired a
one-over-par 72 to finish in a tie
for 22nd with a total of 217.
Freshman Martin Rominger
was second on the team with a
score of 219. Rominger steadily
improved after each round of
competition. He fired a 75. in the
first round, a 74 in the second,
and then finished with a one
under par 70.
After posting an 80 in the
first round, Johan Kok fired a
69 on Saturday and a 71 on
Sunday. His three-day total of
220 placed him in a tie for 36th.
Women’s tennis
falls short at UK
The 22nd-ranked USC
women’s tennis team gave 11th
ranked Kentucky all it could
handle Sunday, but it came up
one match short, losing 4-3 in
Lexington.
With theydefeat, USC falls to
11-3 overall and 4-2 in the SEC.
Despite a huge win for USC’s
doubles team of Jennifer
Radman and Kathy
Boyanovich, who defeated the
4th-ranked team of Sarah
Witten and Carolina Mayorga
8-5, the Gamecocks lost the dou
bles point for just the second
time all season.
Trailing 1-0, USC took three
of the six singles matches and
came just one win shy of regis
tering the upset win.
Katarina Markovski scored an
upset win at No. 1 singles for USC,
beating 26th-ranked Carolina
Mayorga 63,6-2. Radman record
ed a big win at No. 2 singles, top
pling 41st-ranked Witten in three
sets, 7-6,5-7,64.
After a USC win at No. 5 sin
gles by Jodi Kenoyer, USC had
a chance for a come-from-be
hind match win at No. 3 singles.
But Boyanovich dropped a
heartbreaking, three-set match
to 97th-ranked Lauren
Rookledge 1-6,6-2,6-4.
Constant failures at doing the
right thing have added up.
Maybe we can boast as being
one of the nation’s top confer
ences when we don’t hold the
worst officiating crews. It’s long
past time we brought in someone
who would do the job right.
Maybe someone like Lou
Holtz. He’s tough, he’s experi
enced, but, perhaps best of all,
he’s fair.
Foy is a third-year management
student.
“The key is, you got to
put in just as good
pitchers when your
starters come out.
We’re just trying to get
quality arms in there.”
RAYTANNER
use BASEBALL HEAD COACH
filled the closer’s role with four
saves, placing him among con
ference leaders.
“I feel very comfortable with
our bullpen,” Tanner said. “The
key is, you got to put in just as
good pitchers when your starters
come out. We’re just trying to get
quality arms in there.”
Tonight’s game at Sarge Frye
Field will start at 7 p.m. and will
feature a pair of ex-high school
teammates on the mound.
