THE GAMECOCK
The USC men’s golf team is get
ting set to compete in the Seminole
Intercollegiate Challenge in
Tallahassee, Fla., as it passes the
halfway point of the season.
The Gamecocks are ranked 21st
in the nation and are coming off a
tough outing in the Mercedes-Benz
Collegiate in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
Carolina finished 14th out of 15
teams, but was able to shave a con
siderable amount of strokes off its
score as the tournament progressed.
Brent Delahoussaye led the
charge for the Gamecocks, as he shot
a 220, including a final-round 69.
Delahoussaye finished 15th in the
overall individual standings. Martin
Rominger was consistent through
out the tournament, with scores of
77-73-75 that put him in 30th place.
The Mercedes-Benz Collegiate
marks the first time USC has not fin
ished in the top 10 since play began
in early September. The Gamecocks
finished sixth in their two previous
tournaments (the PING Arizona
Intercollegiate and the C.C. of
Louisiana) against some formida
ble competition. USC finished
fourth in the season opener and 10th
in the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
Among the individual highlights
this season are back-to-back sub-70
(68-69) rounds by Rominger at the
par-71 Rave at the Arizona
Collegiate.
In addition to his closing round
69 last week, Delahoussaye fired a 6£
and 69 on consecutive days at the
C.C. of Louisiana. A poor first round
kept him from being among the lead
ers.
With five tournaments left, USC
will be looking to continue the im
provement shown in the closing
rounds at Ponte Vedra to build mo
mentum for the NCAA Regionals,
which begin May 17. The NCAA
Championships will begin May 29
in Columbus, Ohio.
Women’s golf team
impressive in spring start
The Lady Gamecock golf team
just completed an impressive per
formance in its first tournament of
the spring, the Lady Gator
Invitational. USC finished second,
ahead of No. 7 Georgia and No. 8
Vanderbilt, and lost only to 19th
ranked Florida.
Defending SEC champion Kristy
McPherson also contributed to the
Lady Gamecock cause, shooting 77
75-77-229 en route to a 14th-place fin
ish. Marci Robinson and Adrienne
Gautreaux were USC’s other top 20
finishers, shooting 232 and 233.
USC will look to carry this mo
mentum into the Spartan Invitational
in Salinas, Calif on March 4. That will
be Carolina’s last time to shine before
it returns home March 15 for the Lady
Gamecock Classic.
Following the Lady Gamecock
Classic, USC is scheduled to play in
only two more tournaments before the
three-day SEC Championships, which
begin April 19 in Athens, Ga. The
NCAA Regionals will be held May 9
11, and the NCAA Championships
will begin May 21 in Auburn, Wash.
