CD REVIEW
Nappy Roots release first
CD, sound like Outkast
“WATERMELON, CHICKEN,
AND GRITZ”
NAPPY ROOTS
★★ ★★ out of ☆☆☆☆☆
BY WILLIAM MILLS
THE GAMECOCK
Move over Outkast, a new
Southern hip-hop group is
gritting its teeth and jumping
into the fray and its name is
Nappy Roots. With the release
of its first mainstream album,
“Watermelon, Chicken, and
Gritz,” these Kentucky-raised
lyrical cowboys are redefining
hip-hop.
The album is a county-fried
dose of raw unadulterated
music. Nappy Roots support
simplicity and push away the
flashy lifestyle that most
commercial rappers are
known for. The group has
maintained this rustic
approach ever since it released
its debut indie album,
“Country Fried Cess.”
The album became an
instant success on the Western
Kentucky University Campus
where most of the group's
members attended. Nappy
records and shirts quickly
became a local trend, and the
band is now making its way
across the airwaves and the
country.
The group's heritage is an
important aspect of its music.
Artists such as Bubba Sparxx
have recently gained
recognition for being hardcore

Southern, but sometimes being
completely representative of
the southern culture can
pigeonhole a group.
Nappy shows its Southern
love with tracks like “Country
Boyz” and “Kentucky Mud.” At
the same time, the group never
lets go of its artistic sound.
“Watermelon, Chicken, and
Gritz” is homage to itsKentucky
roots while maintaining
mainstream integrity. The
group’s dressed-down realistic
attitude is an image contrary to
many hip-hop artists.
These country boys pride
themselves on their
unwillingness to become
overly materialistic and
extravagant. Even if these
nappy pioneers find fame and
fortune in the industry, you’re
still more likely to see them in
a Honda rather than a BMW. -
The group proclaims love of
, the simple life with songs like
“Ballin’ on a Budget.”
Why choose the name
Nappy Roots? Because it has a
deep meaning that extends to
the heart and style of the
group. Nappy implies the raw,
wild feeling that proves to be a
prevailing attitude in the
band’s music. Also dominant
in the group’s style is a natural
earthy vibe, expressed by the
latter part of their title.
A picture in the liner notes
displays a plate of Southern
soul food, an image that
exemplifies the sound of the
band’s latest release better
than anything else; simple yet
tasty. Nappy Roots will be
playing, ironically enough,
with its forerunners Outkast at
Three Rivers Music Festival.
