HISTORY GIVES FEW CLUES AS TO WHO WILL WIN SG RUNOFF
The past has
split verdict on
runoff’s outcome
i BY BRANDON LARRABEE
\ THE GAMECOCK
At first glance, David
' Bornemann’s first-election lead in
the race for Student Government
president might seem to deter op
ponent Ankit Patel.
USC’s SG history shows that
| front-runners often go on to win
f runoff elections. In the 11 runoffs
held for president since 1987, the
leaders in the first round of bal
loting have won eight times.
But a closer look shows the
numbers don’t favor Bornemann
as much as they appear. All three
wins by the candidates who came
in second in the initial voting
were in races where the margin of
victory the first time was less than
14 percent. Bornemann currently
leads by 11 points.
In fact, front-runners with
those lower margins have split
those races evenly with the un
derdogs, winning only three of
them.

A criminal background check
of both Student Government pres
idential candidates shows that
David Bornemann has received
two tickets for alcohol possession
& as a minor.
In an interview on Tuesday,
Bornemann said he received one
ticket at the Carolina Cup in
Camden this past spring. A certi
fied copy of his ticket is dated
May 31,2001.
Bornemann, who will turn 21
on July 29, 2002, said he had not
been drinking when he received
the ticket at the horse race.
He said he shouldn’t have been
charged.
“I was just standing there car
rying on a conversation, and
there’s a beer at my feet. It was a
faulty charge,” he said.
The case is still pending a possi
ble jury trial, according to the
Kershaw County Magistrate Court.
“My lawyer thinks it’s best to
request a jury trial and let it fil
ter out. If it comes up for trial, he
basically guaranteed me it would
be taken care of,” Bornemann
said.
Bornemann said he received a
second ticket at a party at
University Commons in Cayce
this past August.
Bornemann said he had drunk
two beers before police ticketed
him at the apartment complex.
He said he estimated about 80
other people were ticketed that
night.
“My two tickets have been weE

time to time. I think
there are few college

According to Bornemann, the
incidents aren’t related to his
ability to serve as president.

of the organization overall might
have been,” Bala said.
