Gaspar wins three
SEC titles
The USC men’s and women’s
swimming and diving teams fin
ished the SEC Championships
on Saturday evening at the
Arkansas Natatorium. The No.
14 men’s squad finished in fifth
place with 339 points, while the
Lady Gamecocks placed sixth
overall with 285.5 points.
The fifth-place finish for the
men’s squad was the best con
ference finish for the
Gamecocks since Carolina’s
first season in the SEC, when
USC finished fifth in 1992. The
Lady Gamecocks also tied its
best conference finish in the
SEC. The Gamecocks finish the
meet having broken 10 school
records. Highlighting the meet
was senior All-American Zsolt
Gaspar. With two SEC titles al
ready claimed (50-yard freestyle,
100-yard butterfly), Gaspar won
his third SEC title in as many
nights, setting an SEC record in
the 100 freestyle with a time of
42.89 seconds. With a perfect
three victories in three events
entered, Gaspar was awarded
the SEC Commissioner Cup on
the men’s side. The Cup goes to
the swimmer with the highest
individual point total of the SEC
Championships.
“I’m pleased that we finished
the meet off on a high note,” USC
swimming head coach Don Gibb
said. “I think the 10 records bro
ken shows the movement of this
program is positive and in the
right direction.”
On the women’s side, USC
broke a 10-year old record in the
400-yard freestyle relay, finish
ing with a time of3:23.92. The re
lay of Heather Skaggs, Jenn
VanAssen, Carolynn McHugh
and Kristen Butler placed fourth
overall in the SEC.
Track strong at SEC
Championships
With both Demetria
Washington, Otukile Lekote and
the women’s 4x400-meter relay de
fending their SEC titles, the USC
men’s and women’s track teams
finished ninth and fourth at the
SEC Indoor Track and Field
Championships.
Washington collected her sev
enth SEC title—the most in school
history.
Florida won the women’s ti
tle, while Arkansas upset
Tennessee to win the men’s ti
tle.
USC set a school record in the
men’s 4x400m relay. USC also put
up seven NCAA automatic times
and seven NCAA provisional
times with six athletes collecting
personal bests.
“We had a good finish. We
can’t ask for more than the ef
fort than our men and women
put forth. This is the nation’s
No. 1 conference and there were
so many fine performances,”
said USC head coach Curtis
Frye. “There are four women’s
team’s here that will compete in
two weeks for a national cham
pionship. On the men’s side,
what we brought to meet, they
competed. Our 4x400m relay ran
a world-class time. I am thrilled
to have so many fine young per
formances.”
USC’s women won its sixth
straight 4x400m relay, its third
indoors, putting up an NCAA
automatic time of3:34.74.
