by the number of legislators who
would not agree to sign the pledge.
“It makes me mad,” Bristow
said. “Education should be apri
ority of legislature. This should be
going through right now, and the
fact thaj it isn’t is ridiculous.
Being from Georgia, I’ve seen how
a college scholarship program
works. I wish they would emulate
what Georgia is doing.”
Standing alongside Bristow was
one of his opponents for the presi
dential election, David Bomemann.
He said he was encouraged that oth
er candidates were concerned about
government relationships, a key
part of his “GAME plan.” He was
also pleased to see other students at
the State House showing their sup
nnrf
“Students at the University of
South Carolina mean business.
We’re willing to do what it takes
to make our presence felt,”
Bomemann said.
John Scott, principal sponsor of
the state-run lottery, was more
than pleased to sign the pledge. He
is trying to get his spending bill
passed by the Legislature.
“Every child who wants to go to
college should go to college,” Scott
said. “My number-one priority is
scholarships for students.”
James M."Neal is a member of
the House of Representatives and
a former high school principal.
After working with high school
students as they prepared for col
lege, he knows how important
scholarships are.
“I’m for scholarships, but I
don’t know about this date,” Neal
said. He is concerned that the
money would not be available to
pass sUch a bill before March 28.
Liston Barfield signed the pledge
because he feels it is important for
the money from the lottery to go to
education. Like Neal, he is doubt
ful about the March 28 date.
“I don’t think the money will be
available before fall,” Barfield
said. “It takes a lot to put some
thing like that in place.”
Chrissy Stauffer, a College of
Liberal Arts senator and acade
mics chair, was part of the South
Carolina Lottery Commission for
Better Schools.
“I think what students need to
do if they want to go to college for
free is start calling the Legislature,”
Stauffer said. “It’s real simple and
takes only a few minutes.”
Becky Floyd, another candidate
for treasurer, came to the assem
bly for a few minutes.
Zachary Scott, a College of
Liberal Arts senator, explained
that Floyd has chosen to go di
rectly to the Senate to discuss the
lottery spending plan instead of
taking a more “in-your-face” ap
proach. Scott says he is happy to
see Floyd and Beeks doing what
they can to speed the passage of a
plan.
“I’m glad we’re taking on both
sides. We’re working together,’
Scott said.
