A meningitis infection can re
sult in brain damage, loss of
limbs, kidney failure, hearing
loss or death.
If the disease is detected early
enough, then it is possible to treat
it with antibiotics. However,
since the symptoms of bacterial
meningitis so closely resemble
those of the flu, it can be hard to
catch. The disease also progress
es very rapidly, and it can cause
death within a few hours.
“From what I know, [the risk]
is not that big, or they’d make
more of a deal out of it. So why
worry about it, if it’s not really
prevalent?” Perry said.
However, some students are
concerned about the possibility
of an epidemic at USC. Second
year English student Adam Habib
said, “If there is a real concern
from an epidemiological perspec
tive, then there definitely needs
to be some sort of statement from
the administration to that effect.”
The vaccine protects against
the meningitis bacteria groups
that account for 70 percent of all
cases among college students.
“The vaccine is not 100 percent;
it only protects you against cer
tain types of meningitis, but it’s
the best protection that we have
to offer right now,” King said.
The effects of the vaccine last
three to five years. However,

will not spread the bacteria to

dential candidates.
“We can’t do what we need to
do unless the SG is doing what
they need to do,” Bryant said.
“This is the first step for us to get
active in SG.”
Bryant said he was pleased
with the candidates’ willingness
to participate in the report card
program.
Such a positive response from
candidates will most likely
prompt the NAACP to organize a
similar questionnaire for next
year’s election, Bryant said.
“We hope this can be some
thing the students can look for
ward to every year,” he said.
